Grime is a genre that first came to the forefront of urban black and uk music culture, with the arrival of Dizzee Rascal's Boy In Da Corner and of Pow/Forward riddim in the year 2003.
It was a new black genre of London that was, the, avenue for the UK and London to promote and emphasise black MC culture in the country. Dizzee rascal sold 100,000 records and Wiley was selling the Wiley Kat Vinyl volumes out of his car boot, with for example, tracks like eskimo, freeze and snowman. Wiley later released his album Treddin on thin ice in 2004.
In 2003 Grime radio stations like Rinse Fm and Déjà Vu were an excellent avenue for the culture to thrive and the sound to spread. Events like Sidewinder and Eskimo Dance were also important for the culture.
Grime later fell away from the forefront of black UK urban culture and from the years around 2006 to 2010 the streets was saying that grime was dead although it wasn’t.
In the years before 2014 grime was maintained as a real music genre by the pivotal Logan Sama Kiss FM radio show that had 50k listeners in the UK on Monday at 10pm.
Logan Samas weekly kiss show was also one of the only legal grime radio shows on a legal radio station.
The Logan Sama radio show was important because it allowed grime uk mixtape culture to thrive, and grime fans were fed with a lot of music material, with weekly grime mc mixtape releases. Wiley – Grime Wave was the archetypal release of the time.
The main reason that grime’s return to popularity was important was because, the fans, for example, on grime forum thought the music was excellent and completely excellent. However it wasn’t well received by the average music fan or listener. Grimeforum posters from the forum that was started in early 2008, prophesised and dreamed about the return of grime to mainstream popularity and mainstream acceptance.
In 2014 modern grime music emerged as an accepted popular music genre.
In 2014 we had Skepta, Stormzy and Kano and more.
Skepta released That’s Not Me and the That’s Not Me Remix in 2014.
Skepta’s hard lyrics over a self produced instrumental put grime right back onto the map and he later released, the Mercury Prize, award winning Konnichiwa.
Stormzy released the track Shut Up in 2014, which has over 100m views on youtube, where he mc’s over XTC – Functions On The Low.
However Stormzy does hip hop also so he is not fully grime.
Kano released the popular Garage Skank and released his album Made In The Manor which sold over 100,000 records in the UK.
One of the main reasons that 2014 was important for grime was that it was the first year that grime had a Mobo Award officially.
The Grime Mobo Award meant that grime would be recognised as a real London UK genre yearly. Year on year.
The nominations were. Big Narstie, Ghetts, JME, Lethal Bizzle, Meridian Dan, Novelist, Skepta, Sox, Stormzy, Wiley
Stormzy won the first grime mobo award and grime had finally returned to the forefront of music in this country. There were several artists with the talent to keep the culture vibrant so people remained entertained. (Stormzy has also received a few mercury prize nominations over the years.
In 2014 Skepta won the Mobo Award for Best Video so he also claimed an excellent grime accolade.

One of the most important events of the classic grime year 2014 was the jammer organised Lord of the Mics 6 P Money VS Big H Live clash.
There was a lot of hype surrounding the clash and it was the first ever live lord of the mics clash. During the clash both mc’s were on the same level.
However there was some controversy when Big H refused to perform his bonus round lyrics and walked off the stage and seemed to forfeit. P money was ready to perform in the bonus round and Big H was not.
The Year 2014 and grime was officially BACK.
