Your claim doesn't fit the data; it's pure cope. The referendum was a vain attempt to shore up the dam as it was just about to burst; there would have been no reason for it otherwise.

I'm saying this because The Times did a large survey of Gen Z opinion, on which they reported at length last week. Their vox pops didn't sound like LARPing, especially as this religious recrudescence was reflected in clear changes in attitudes towards dating, sex, and marriage.

You have to realise that atheism is unusual in human societies. It's not that religion and spirituality are flimsy bolt-ons so much as the chassis.

Normally the moribund atheismescing society can't bounce back as the religious signal has grown too weak and children are raised by increasingly atheistic parents, but a combination of more religious immigrants and the great smorgasbord of the internet has broken the death feedback loop.

I think this change also reflects a countervailing tendency within progressive liberalism to establish very strict guardrails for the libertarian behaviour that otherwise prevails e.g. the increasing focus on courteous behaviour around women and adhering to the correct ethical set of beliefs and communicating "appropriately".

Atheist progressivism was becoming more and more like a religion itself anyway, but without spirituality nor a willingness to attack the deep philosophical questions that worry human beings since time immemorial.

The reason for the referendum was to prevent a split in the Tory party. Everyone else ended up being dragged into Cameron's gamble and forced to pick a side.
