its weird how you are often playing chess against YOURSELF

i guess some people are totally happy with what they do instinctively but for a neurotic you're constantly fighting your deepest instincts

There's an Anthony Bourdain interview where he talks about this:

“There’s a guy inside me who wants to lay in bed, and smoke weed all day, and watch cartoons, and old movies. I could easily do that. My whole life is a series of stratagems to avoid, and outwit, that guy.”

whenever bourdain gets mentioned i cant get over how he killed himself after argento told him to stop busting her balls or something

The opening line from the preface in the Marcuse

This book was written in the hope that it would make a small contribution to the revival, not of Hegel, but of a mental faculty which is in danger of being obliterated: the power of negative thinking. As Hegel defines it: “Thinking is, indeed, essentially the negation of that which is immediately before us." What does he mean by "negation,” the category of dialectic?

Sounds like linebaugh is joining our book club

In fact here is the introduction for all to read. Unfortunately it is rotated you have to go to your local library and print it out. Mark it up and scan it in with your marginalia so we can compare notes
