the genius of kool g rap

Interesting thing about him is he made the transition from those faster late 80s beats to the slower 90s style quite successfully

Not sure others (big daddy kane e.g.) made it

I suppose that transition was about the rise of the g funk sound to an extent? Or maybe the jazz rap thing too

Compare "live at BBQ" Nas to "memory lane" Nas say

Very strange to think about not being able to even HEAR songs unless you had the CD or I dunno Westwood played it or something

I dunno whether I believe the story about Pun getting down on one knee when he met him, partly because I can picture him struggling to get back up.
damn, just realized big pun was my age when he died. guess i assumed his transition from ripped chad to 700lbs took until like mid 30s. likewise kool g rap is my current age in the it's a shame video but already seems a grizzled veteran. but i guess that's part of the aura of this stuff, the sense that even though they're young these guys have already had several lifetimes' worth of experiences. which makes you precocious but is also a kind of curse. always think of b.i.g. walking around with a cane in his final days at the ancient age of 24 as symbolic of that. the fast life. different tempos of life.

I was thinking last night that the opening bars of "C.R.E.A.M." are quite kool g rappish

But maybe that's just how people rapped in those days
