Doctors as Magicians

Placebos, emetics and bleeding... and chewing on a bit of cord while they sawed your leg off at the knee with a rusty cutlass using home-distilled whiskey as an antiseptic. That was the entirety of pre-20th century medicine as far as I can tell. Maybe big pharma isn't so bad after all. Gimme oxycontin any day.

Control the four humours, treat a choleric nature with cool oils etc, a phlegmatic one with pepper

But can we hear about the magical qualities of your experiences, Connor and Rich? That is the thread name after all. I hate to be such a stickler about this.

i will say with this place..... despite the pain in these experiences.... i am always fascinated by the xrays they use on me..... they put this one thing in my mouth to bite on in certain positions, and attached to it is some sort of mirroring device, and once i am biting in position, the dentist will line up a bigger capturing machine to the mirror that is attached to what i am biting, and then i hear a beep, and thats when she shifts the devices.....

another thing about this place.... only women work there.... ive been going for years and only women have worked there.... something oddly comforting about it all since dentists are known as evil..... but its all women, so those preconceived views are eradicated when i enter the chair....

Very little magic going on here, we don't even get that drug you get in the US that means you come out all fucked and all your friends laugh at you and put it on tiktok.

One thing I will say, I broke both my front teeth quite a long time ago and I've broken the mended ones loads of times since, which means I've had to have them fixed countless times, so I do have quite a good fix on the development of dental technology - at first they slapped a bit of filling on and tried their best to carve it into the right shape, now they have all these scans of your mouth and they can move around the 3d image like some kind of HMG war fantasy.

When your mouth is held fixed open like that with all kinds of weird bits of metal, plastic and rubber sticking out I can't help but think it looks like some kind of special interest pornographic film.

Oh yeah nitrous nitrous is definitely magic. When I went under as a teenager I started physically threatening the medical staff if they wouldn't let me leave. "Throwing my weight around" was the phrase the nurse attendant used.

My brother ran off with a gauzy mouth barefoot looking for ice cream and the pharmacy called the police
