Strange 'world music' fads

I always think that Die Antwoord were very influential. More so than people talk about. After they came out with their saffa scum bag shtick you started getting equivalents from all over.

Oirish plastic pikeys revelling in their dirtiness..

Russians playing at being gopniks

There must be loads more.

A few years later we get Khruangbin showing you that there is psychedelic rock in the middle-east, we just needed some photogenic texans to tell us about it

And luka's favourite doing the same for siberia

What else is in this vein? A glossily repackaged isolated ethnic group pretending they have a long history of just western enough to sell, just exotic enough to be interesting, rock music... am I making sense?

Mizar from what is now North Macedonia with a toe-tapping version of the Eurythmics classic

A lot of this stuff surfs on "wow I didn't know they had electricity in Albania never mind music"

Thought of Goat for some reason, are they still going? From Sweden obviously as you can probably tell from the videos

This band is based in Lisbon, I know the main guy, he's American as you can probably tell from the video

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the thread as this stuff isn't rock music and they aren't pretending to be anything, but Omar Souleyman and the Shangaan Electro stuff both had a moment in the 2010s. The latter had an Honest Jons compilation then everyone moved on to the next thing.

There was that Dutch stuff called Bubblin' that Planet Mu did a comp. of too.

I bought that Shangaan Electro thing...

One thing with these videos, they know that people are afraid to look racist or at least culturally insensitive by going "what the fuck are they doing?".

You can easily visualise the conversation

"Do you mind if i ask why they are clad in weird orange boiler suits paired with dayglo clown wigs?"

"Er... that's the traditional solstice costume of the Hadzeromo tribe you ignoramus, it's been handed down for millennia and almost wiped out, the last thing they need is you denying their right to exist... fucking hell".

Then back at the record the label, they'll be going, right how far can we push this thing? How about we glue dog dicks to our foreheads, will they believe that's tradition?

I'm a 55 year old housewife from Texas. Have you see a video from from the USA? This is true art .from the beginning to the end was beautifully acted, the storyline was great and the beautiful clothes and location was just wonderful. And the music was so beautiful and unique. I love the bagpipes. Watching you play and dance at the same time was just amazing! Thanks so much for sharing your talent, you have a new fan in Texas
