A song that loads of people know, but have no idea where it came from?

Fried rabbit with biscuits and gravy is my favorite meal of all time. Been eating it since I was a knee high to a grasshopper back when my grandma would cook it up on an old wood stove.

Brings back great memories as a child. My mom would cook up whatever I brought home. Squirrel, dove, quail, rabbit, every fish I caught, you name it. Always fried and smothered in country gravy

Anything with biscuits and gravy is pure soul food.

I have heard some good covers of One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong.

21st century songs that I think could "make it:" The Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Maps, The National's Fake Empire, Father John Misty's I Love You Honeybear, most of Lana Del Rey's discography.

I'm not actually a huge fan of hers, I just think the size and character of her following suggests there will be covers until the end of time

Yeah, Don McLean, “American Pie,” what a song that is. A jester? Sure, the jester writes songs like “Masters of War,” “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall,” “It’s Alright, Ma” – some jester. I have to think he’s talking about somebody else. Ask him.

Seems a little thin don't you think? 3/4 are Gil-related and one's Canadian. The Gil one is a 1970s cover of a 1950s song. Not sure that we have discovered an American musical trend of the 21st C, micro or otherwise.

they are all gil related, it's the same vocal on each tune (except rihanna but she's very close to the source material). and canada will rightly be part of the US soon enough.

it's a lot of covers within a short period. i didn't know the gil scott heron one was a cover itself. but would a contemporary folk canon not be made of samples. why would we expect the old oral form of folk tradition to be replicated using the same mechanism now. the ease of copy and paste is a defining feature of contemporary lives

the bass riff from 7 nation army is the most widely replicated tune of the folk canon, it has a life totally divorced from the source, and is passed around orally
