somehow they'd never been on my radar at all before reading this. even checked to see if any of their most famous songs generated a flicker of recognition and nope. for better or worse there is something implacably strange and unique about their sound. the studio trickery's no longer state of the art, but it's like the strain to achieve certain effects with the era's once-cutting-edge and now-forgotten tech gives the results a kind of permanent uncanniness.

10cc were heavily invested in Strawberry Studios in Stockport ( adjacent to Manchester, UK ) where both "I'm Not In Love" and "Love Will tear Us Apart" were recorded

unfortunately 10cc destroyed any credibility they had by recording the absolute worst piece of racist crap / "cod reggae' ( even outdoing Kate Bush )

maybe they are like Steely Dan and I'm missing the supreme irony of the lyrics - however, like Steely Dan they do have a hidden meaning to their name - the "Dan" were named after a dildo whilst 10cc is supposedly the average amount of male ejaculate. ( rock trivia is my speciality )

there is a lot to be said about schools being modelled on the prison system, but in your case I'd say the vice principal of your school was probably recruited as a consultant advising on how to run a "detention camp" in Guantanamo Bay
