somehow they'd never been on my radar at all before reading this. even checked to see if any of their most famous songs generated a flicker of recognition and nope. for better or worse there is something implacably strange and unique about their sound. the studio trickery's no longer state of the art, but it's like the strain to achieve certain effects with the era's once-cutting-edge and now-forgotten tech gives the results a kind of permanent uncanniness.

10cc were heavily invested in Strawberry Studios in Stockport ( adjacent to Manchester, UK ) where both "I'm Not In Love" and "Love Will tear Us Apart" were recorded

unfortunately 10cc destroyed any credibility they had by recording the absolute worst piece of racist crap / "cod reggae' ( even outdoing Kate Bush )

10cc - Dreadlock Holiday

maybe they are like Steely Dan and I'm missing the supreme irony of the lyrics - however, like Steely Dan they do have a hidden meaning to their name - the "Dan" were named after a dildo whilst 10cc is supposedly the average amount of male ejaculate. ( rock trivia is my speciality )

Rosina de Peira - La Novia

Occitanian chant anthem

edit: sometimes folk music is beyond good

edit: for a folk record there is a lot going on with the production of this recording, somehow the producer has replicated the sound of INCIPIENT GNOSIS, I'd like to smoke DMT while playing this tune to be honest

what does "best of" mean?

surely we can only measure that by the worst?

WE NEED A YARDSTCK!

here are my nominations for WORST voicescapes

Laurie Anderson - O superman

Lou Reed married her, W. S. Burroughs guested on one of her albums, it reached number 2 in the UK singles charts, so maybe I'm full of shit

the next tune also reached number 2 in the UK singles charts, and was a billboard number one hit in the US

I hate it more than words can relate

Bobby McFerrin - Don't worry, Be Happy

The "instruments" in the a cappella song are entirely overdubbed voice parts and other sounds made by McFerrin, using no instruments at all; McFerrin also sings with an affected accent, though he stated that "I hate to go so far as to say it's Jamaican. It was heavily influenced by Juan's Mexican Restaurant, which was just around the corner from the studio."

Indian spiritual Guru Meher Baba (1894–1969) often used the expression "Don't worry, be happy" when communicating with his followers in the West,[12] and the expression was printed on inspirational cards and posters during the 1960s. In 1988, McFerrin noticed a similar poster in the apartment of jazz duo Tuck & Patti in San Francisco,[citation needed] and he was inspired by the expression's charm and simplicity.

this is the sort of stuff that just makes me want to puke - if I'm going to join a cult then I want sex orgies and blood massacres!

You don't know how hard I've been restraining myself from trolling mvuent's thread by posting that.
I think I once posted about how, one year, not too long after it was released, the vice principal, the sick bastard he was, got on a roll of playing that on the school intercom at the end of every school day.

there is a lot to be said about schools being modelled on the prison system, but in your case I'd say the vice principal of your school was probably recruited as a consultant advising on how to run a "detention camp" in Guantanamo Bay

My favourite choral stuff is by Gesualdo, John Tavener, and Thomas Tallis. I usually listen to it when seriously inebriated. But also occasionally that Preisner - Lacrimosa thing, Gregorian Chant, or even Czukay's Boat Woman Song.

Ross Harris, "Poem", at 1 hour 8 minutes 3 seconds into this

also Jack Body, "Krytophones" at 1.28.48 is also voicescapey

The track that follows, by Ross Harris, "To A Child" features a child's voice

Actually the second track, by Douglas Lillburn, "Poem In Time of War", also features a nicely wavered child-voice, e.g. at 15.13
