i think comments are what makes social media and "doomscrolling" so addicting.... like i willingly click on posts when i see comments just to see the audacity of stupid people to say what they will... i could just keep scrolling.... but i click and read anyway.... its sad....

i guess what does make them fascinating is that "the online" is the only place you can actually see these "comments".... everyday in life you walk the streets... you see thousands of faces you will never see again.... as you walk by and see these faces.... u never really stop to think.... he this person could be a retard online saying stupid shit about lebron or bob dylan.... even if you do meet them... nd start talking to them.... you prob wont even hear them utter the dumb shit they do say online..... i say this as someone who doesnt say stupid shit online

Facebook was the real opening of the stupidity vault. That was when we had the reckon with the stupidity of other people. Its a difficult thing for us liberals to confront. Because theres no way these people should be allowed to vote or to hold an opinion.

That was when normal people piled into the internet en masse and even peolle youd known all your life and have a lot of affection for turned out to be appallingly stupid, subhuman to all intents and purposes.

Daily Mail and Telegraph comments are notorious too. Comment sections filled with caricatures of entitled boomers.

Laziness vs. stupidity's a constant back and forth. Are people that stupid or are they just not taking the time to think? If they did, would they come to less stupid conclusions or would they just sit there thinking stupid things and still come out with something stupid?

Crisis of agency at scale, boredom, stupidity, people quoting stats although I used to think the latter was a US sports phenomena (sports phone in radio etc) whatever is has morphed and spread to every subject every where, a new habitus altogether

I feel like most of my friends/family would never leave a comment on any social media platform.

I've always been a weirdo in my group (in general, yes) in terms of posting on forums...

Anyway I think it's worth remembering that what you read online isn't necessarily representative of the average person. And what the people write online, especially on social media, might not even be representative of THEM.

I do think most people (yours truly included) are stupid by default, it takes a bit of effort to be thoughtful, and we'd rather spend that effort on something enjoyable like losing to 12 year olds on chess.com

Also you have to have some sympathy for the idiot commenters on these platforms, who are being goaded into emotional reactions by the platforms, who are interested in producing stupid kneejerk emotions because those are the crack cocaine of emotions

All that said, I have encountered people in my adult life who are thick in a very specific way. They're not unintelligent people, they're capable of being thoughtful, but they're not thoughtful and they're almost aggressively thoughtless.

I think you encounter more of these people at school—which isn't to say you don't have highly educated idiots, but I think you're liable to end up in a bubble of not-idiots as you get older and can be more selective.

I would say quality of discourse here is somewhere below average for the elite quasiblog discussions of 2015 UST, somewhat above average for contemporary quasi-intellectual parameatspace discouses like r/RSPod, and about on track for infamous brainy 2025 discords like Machine Wash Cold and Rogues Clowns Fools

Effort, openness, curiosity seem to matter as much or more than smarts in determining discourse quality.

Main issue across all brainy contemporary discourses seems to be that there are no stakes, so everyone end up talking to themselves in public, because it's effortful to bridge the gap and engage meaningfully

Millers Law of Communication remains the best tactic I know for real engagement but requires buy-in and vigilance and a culture that normalizes it

And also knowing why we are talking to each other. Make fun of AI xrisk folx all you want, their belief that something worldshatteringly important and dangerous was about to go down mobilized them into extreme coherence, collaboration, and conceptual development absent other online chatathons. Dissensus has no—or doesn't yet know—itd raison detre, thus, this mess

The fact that you have to write this means Dissensus is not exempt
Not exactly what I mean. I'm talking about people who can barely read and the latent stupidity of the populace as an abstract lovecraftian presence though dissensus does get possessed by whatever forces that compel people to act like morons so partially related. Like biscuits isn't an idiot he's more of a sucker but that just links back to another culture war social cybernetics conversation that we're always having.

For example Kid Charlemagne and I are completely convinced that the stupidity that brews in Kobe Bryant mamba mentality motivational edit comment sections was the entity at the wheel when the Luka Doncic trade happened

Anything like that's inundated with comments from the most stupid of dudes. The kind of guys who regularly watch Diary of a CEO.
