The way its opening interacts with New World's: the white man's boats coming into bay, a mutineer locked up in the bulwark, the Margarat Meade-type of early 20th C primitivism/imperial interaction (mutual curiosity, a one-way longing for simplicitity cloaked in all the accompanying myths of noble savagery). That one mention, midway, "Who knows, Guadalcanal just might turn out to be the turning point in this goddam war." You sit in intimacy, close-up, the way the men see it, just some goddam marlarial beach in the middle of nowhere. You don't realize you're in the middle of a myth, a world-historical event, until long after it's over. In New World, this is Malick never using the name Pocahontas.

I'm very pro-Knight of Cups. I think it does well to emulate dream like memories, no crisp beginnings or ends, one scene bleeding into the next. But again its very forward with its profundity, which can rub one the wrong way if they don't buy into it from the start, no?

Hmm. Well it doesn't seem much is left implicit with Malick, but I think it works. Almost in some kind of classically sublime sense, where every moment of the film is just dripping with forsakenness (in the case of Knight of Cups?) or passion, grace (Hidden Life?). Something proclamative? Be it celebration or atonement?

Yeah very true. Also very trite.
But yeah there ARE some powerfully involving scenes in that film... I just wish he'd still had the power to bind them together into a whole at that point. Some good scenes don't make a film sadly.

@IdleRich Yeah I think that's fair. I'd never deny Malick has eyeroll moments; he 100% devolves into melodrama at points. But there are so many good moments I'm willing to sit through the show, the experiments.
