It is what it is
The new El-P's a big disappointment to me, and I love Fan Dam and all his productions for various other acts (the track at the end of the Can Ox live thing was really good, likewise the Perceptionist tracks he did). I was fearing an indie crossover, given that Trent Reznor, Mars Volta etc were involved, but their input is pretty minimal. Instead it just sounds like El-P by numbers, sarcastic, drawled raps and self-consciously 'left field', unfunky and, alas, forgetable beats. It sounds like what Def Jux haters say all their stuff sounds like. Maybe it's a grower, but I usually love his stuff straight off. I listened to most of 'Little Johnny From the Hospital' the other night, and I still love it to death, but this new stuff I'm not feeling at all.

yeah, i do sort of like the el p album but theres somethng a bit deflated about it... maybe thats maturity or him getting more comfortable but i dont really feel like returning to it. the melodic elements and attempts at more complex beats or diff arrangments are interesting but im not sure they really work. they just feel a bit too grafted on.

So far....

There have been about 12-15 underground releases of note so far in 2007 and NONE from major labels. Hell Razah, The Snowgoons, Sean Price, etc. have all been making noise and hip hop sales have taken a tremendous nose dive in the interim. Maybe the 2nd quarter will be better...I hope so. One.

Rap and Politics in Senegal

Nomadic Wax, the label that produced the African Underground collection, is currently producing a documentary about the 2007 elections and the role of youth culture and hiphop. It's called “Democracy in Dakar”. Three episodes from the film are available online now. Check them here

All this is in the wake of the heavy participation of Senegalese rappers in the 2000 election of Abdoulaye Wade, who was seen as a bit of a youth hero and underdog. Apparently they are pretty dissatisfied with Wade and his policies since being elected.

Consequence drops....

This Tuesday, Consequence's new album "Don't Quit Your Day Job" will drop...and catch a brick. I don't think he'll break 25,000 in first week sales. It's a shme because it's a quality album. SMH. One.

this elp album isnt perfect - i know im being fussy but why must mars volta be there on the 1st song?! i dont need the indie guests on this and its not as good as fandam but its still pretty fucking awesomely hardcore. i dont think theres been a better hip hop album so far this year (ruff draft doesnt count cos thats four years old).
