Years ago, a good friend who works at The New York Times showed me a locked file cabinet containing pre-written obits for hundreds of famous people. I remember reading the draft of Ronald Reagan's obit a few years before he died.

I had lunch with my friend at the Times last week, we chatted with a reporter who was in the process of drafting Harrison Ford's obit. Apparently it's a common practice when famous people turn 80 years old.

I wonder if any aging celeb has been, er, helped to die by a journo who'd written what they thought was a really good obit and was getting impatient about publishing it? Could be a decent idea for a novel, anyway (one for @IdleRich's story idea threads, if he likes.)

I'm sure there have been instances where a publication has mistakenly published an obit for a living person, but not intentionally.
