Road Kill - Intro to Grime

roadkill.0.jpg

first of several of my DJ mixes I'll post here... made from the few big Grime releases available here in the States but mostly with the tracks Matt graciously hooked me up with - so it's prolly nothing most of you UK geezers haven't heard before, but you might enjoy the way it is mixed, the selection, and it might be useful as an introduction to the genre for some of your less informed friends (I tried to pick both accessible and definitive tracks).

with Grime you can't do much in terms of tricked out mixing back'n'forth and layering (just wait until you hear the minimal techno mixes ;) but there are still a few acrobatic moments, it is still pretty much "seamless" or atleast flows along well, and with some serious thought to the track programing.

I'm trying to do an artist list, but because most of the CDR's Matt gave me have no tags and are not labeled, I'm at a loss as to who most of these people are. if one of you Grime heads can help me out I would REALLY appreciate it!!!

well I went there to look but only found the list from 2003 (and a load of stuff I would like to read but prolly will never have time to). so no 2004 and 2005... but now I remember that one of them had tags on the CD...

This was a decent enough mix... fairly tight for most of it (gets a bit wobbly towards the end), and loads of good tunes.

Two small bits of technical advice:

1. Dont let the levels peak when youre recording the mix, and dont boost the levels above 0db after youve recorded it. Youll end up with distortion and nastiness - I think theres a few bass farts on here caused by this.

2. If youre distributing something on the net, its probably a good idea to present it as one single MP3 instead of cut into individual tracks, as otherwise the mix wil play with gaps at the most important bits on the average joes MP3 player. Cut up is good for burning CD's - less so for MP3 players... same complaint here: http://www.dissensus.com/showthread.php?t=3038

thanks for the tips... I had not noticed the bass distorting in any places and I've bumped the CD in my car many, many times so maybe this happened during the mp3 compression... hmmm...

I guess I would like people to burn these mixes to disc... maybe the best solution is to just break it up into 3 or 4 big sections, that way people can still skip on disc, and doesn't have so many little gaps on mp3 player.

looking back it woulda been fun to put some more instrumental dubstep interluudes in between the spit sessions, but I just wanted to squeeze as many sick tunes in there as possible...
