it's this basic difference in personal philosophies that explains why both of us use dissensus
Yeah, luka hasn't had a good night on Dissensus unless he's boshed a handful of lies, snorted a line of fibs, injected a few whoppers between his toes and freebased a seven-gram rock of porkies.

International Superstar Soccer for the win. Why?

It allowed a 3-2-3-2 formation, ie 2 centre backs and a sweeper/libero who’d play exactly like Mathieus Sammer, a deep lying water carrier in midfield and one slightly more conventional midfield general who’d mix defence and attack. Add 2 lightning wingers, one out and out striker supported by a centre forward and a rogue playmaker with mad skills in between

An old mate who was the lead programmer for Atari’s hit Sensible Soccer admitted ISS pissed on all the contemporary competition. Considering it was 28+ years ago, the passing options were insanely creative and it remains one of the better sports simulations ever coded. Worth gripping a battered N64 for plus multiplayer Goldeneye, what more do you want
The best football game is Olympic Soccer and its functionally identical sequel Soccer 97: abysmal as simulations but with fantastically direct and responsive gameplay that rewarded the skilled player over the unskilled every time.

Banging ravey soundtrack too.

You're only saying that because you played an experienced player and got trashed by double figures rather than by a tight 3-2 with your welter of Fifa assists.

take your erse-wiped England shirt and recycle it ffs

pre ISS FIFA 94 for the win with the glitch where, if you shot from 30 yards out in line with the goal post, the ball would go flying in regardless

30 years old, so bad it was fun

This is the mark of a proper game. In a 'real' game of football there is an almost infinite set of equivalent scenarios in which the ball is heading towards the goal with nothing in the way of it. The game has merely extended this set but in doing so confirmed its particularity and vivid existence beyond the straitjacket of mere 'simulation'.

Not all 'simulation' games are of the same kind: some are useful simulations in that the player is trained in such a way that they would be better at the activity proper e.g. Formula 1 games, whereas others are only simulations of some aspect of the activity's consumption: the football 'sims' are simulations of watching football on TV and do little or nothing to improve one's own football performances.
