(the inevitable dumb) BEST OF '06 (thread)

michael

Bring out the vacuum
My turn to embarrass myself... ;) I tried to be a good boy and write stuff about each release.

Albums / EPs / mixes:

Daniel Maze - How's The Serenity? (free)
"Electronic" producer working with tape decks. It's not so different from other soundscapey stuff, but I really enjoy it and like the moments where a big wave of lushness will be abruptly stopped when he hits a pause on the tape. Lends a bit of grubbiness in there.

J Dilla - Donuts
Lots of short hip-hop instrumentals, mashed together, messy as hell. Heaps of edited soul tunes, often changing pitch and/or tempo mid-track. Individual bits and pieces are very sketchy, as a whole it works really well. Unpredictable, which is not something I could say for a lot of music I enjoyed this year.

James Holden At The Controls mix CD
This mix is basically tweaky house-tempo techno business but mixes in a lot of other bits and bobs including kraut-rock (Kluster), SKAM-style electronica (AFX, Christ, Slag Van Loom), and even a Fennesz track. I find the variety refreshing, and the focus on texture is right up my alley. Not sure I'd want to hear it in a club, but I recommend it as an album to listen to.

Junior Boys - Is This Goodbye?
Don't think I need to say anything much about this given the number of times it's come up.

Mapstation - Distance Told Me Things To Be Said
Beatless, instrumental music largely based on gentle, repeating synth arpeggios. No added gloss or date-able glitchy action. Reminds me most of things like Cluster circa Zuckerzeit or even the pared back bits of Zeit-era Tangerine Dream, but it also takes in various African influences and instrumentation (tuned percussion) ... sorta exploring trance music from two continents? Didn't really expect a new ambient record to impress me so much.

Soundslike1981's Blogariddims 6 / Collide+Coalesce mix MP3 (free)
I guess you can just listen to it. I love the blurred boundaries of this music - the really lengthy layering of different pieces of music in a way that really creates something new.

Single tracks / songs:

Cassie - Me & U
Clipse - Mr Me Too
I know, I know, Mr Me Too...

Holden - Lump
Techno mixed with Windowlicker-ish inhuman choirs and Fennesz-ish noisy melodic bits... beautiful harmonies throughout, actually made more palletable because of the strange arrangement.

James Figurine - Apologies
I've been following the label Plug Research since its inception and was kinda amazed when one of its roster (Dntel) completely blew up with his Postal Service project. His next solo album was basically an indie-loving electronica producer trying to synthesize a new found love for Kompakt into his style. Probably unsurprisingly, most of the album is shit - beyond taste differences, he can't really sing or write good songs - but I did really like this one song and its Doom's Night bass, to the point where I don't regret buying the album.

Peter Bjorn & John - Young Folks (free)
Boring indie band luck out (in NZ and Australia that means "have good luck", btw) with this super catchy tune. The bored-sounding female vocalist reminds me of the disinterested manner of Hope Sandoval.. and I like Hope Sandoval.

Plump DJs - Electric Disco (D Ramirez Mix)
Stupid, bulging house party. Got the pitch-bend action to make my brain go funny. Honourable mention to Mason's Exceeder and bleep (Dissensian, not site) for pimping this shit so hard.

Thom Yorke - Harrowdown Hill
Haha, I've tried, but I can't write anything here without getting too defensive, so I'll leave it be.

... I really think I've mostly been listening to older music this year, though, because this doesn't feel like an accurate picture of (most of) what I've been buzzing about.

I have to say I've pretty much lost all interest in hip hop this year... although I do enjoy the occasional reggaeton mixes I hear on the radio for some reason (I think I'm the only white guy in southern california that likes this stuff)... still seems raw and open to possibilies. That, and America's going hispanic so I see traces of America's future in it...

sooooo...what, no one going with the arctic monkeys album? ;)

i am
although ive gotten a bit tired of it/them in the last month or two just cos theyre everywhere in every end of year roundup (not even the music ones, the general ones that mention them in relation to myspace etc) so the album is seeming a bit annoyingly overfamiliar
leave before the lights come on is one of my favourite singles of 2006 though

Me & my partner in crime did a sort of best of 2006 wrap-up with just the stuff we actually bought. Here it is in Ogg format with some inane babbling here and there. Mine is mostly techno and his is ambient/idm/downtempo/psyche

Download Mine
tracklist:
Gosub - We Are Still Searching (Kondi)
Deep Chord vs. Octal Industries - Arrival/Departure (Octal)
Mike Parker - Inversions Vol. 2 (Geophone)
2 AM/FM - Pt.2 (Spectral Sound)
Jeff Mills - Natural World (Puprose Maker)
Betty Botox - RVNG Of The NRDS Vol. 2 (RVNG)
Baby Ford + Eon / Link - Dead Eye / Amenity (Plus 8)
Psyche/BFC - ART3 (Applied Rhythmic Technology)

Download His
(tracklist may be off a little bit)
Louis Haiman - Soul Purpose (fwd:thought)
Rena Jones - Unwrap Me Slowly (native state)
Benoît Pioulard - Ext. Leslie Park (kranky)
Ratatat - Kennedy (xl)
Travis Stewart - Becoming an Eagle Returning to Korea '34 (merck)
Machine Drum - Stevie Bam Jackson Apology (Kettel remix) (merck)
Boards Of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy (warp)
Landau - Stevieblam remix (merck)
Marconi Union - Sleepless (all saints)
Chapterhouse - Pearl (creation)
Outputmessage - Sommeil (ghostly)
Miles Tilmann - Floating Windows (consumer's research)
Digital Samsara - Beyond Concept (cosmic vent)
Soundhacker - Charge (cactus island)
Terre's Neu Wuss Fusion - Love on a Real Train (Risky Business) (ghostly)
Jason Sloan - Broken Skin (slo:bor)

And here's a few tracks I liked but didn't buy:
* Cansei De Ser Sexy - Let's Make Love And Listen To Death From Above - super party tune, i love that accented girly rapping.

* The Freak With Thousand E's - I'm your Pusher - hypnotic acid house. Acid will never die.

* Skream - Skreamizm Vol. 2 (I actually bought this but not in time for the recording above) - I'm a real dubstep dilettante but this impressed me more than any of the other stuff that I heard browsing through Boomkat/Juno. "Bitstream" is as good as any wobbler out there and he can also do melody where most producers don't even try. The album sucks though.

* Milanese - Peggy Flynn Remix - badboy lyrics cut up in a cool manner over a diry anti-groove

It is what it is
That Deep Chord vs. Octal Industries singles was good, and I'd forgotten about that Boards of Canada ep. Is there stuff on that Psyche/BFC thing that's not otherwise available?

cuz we need more lists, here is my own :)

ALBUMS:

TOP TIER:

Joanna Newsom - Ys: Just keeps getting better and better. Super strong from start to finish. Lovely
Hot Chip - The Warning: Dancy, up beat, a bit strange, a bit heartfelt--everything you need!
The Knife - Silent Shout: Both Hot Chip and The Knife add vocals and something of a pop sensibility to otherwise obtuse electronic music and ended up with two very different, though no less interesting albums. I wish albums like these were the norm rather than rock music.

SECOND TIER:

Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet: Didn't expect too much out of this, but i'm just loving it. Warm, enveloping, with an undercurrent of menace. A good combination emotions :)
Burial - Burial: you all know the score on this one.
LCD Soundsystem - 45:33: I've snuck this into the multi-cd changer at our house in my quest to slowly inflict more and more of my music upon my poor roommates. I think they actually like it! Goddamn brilliant, in my book.

good call, really should have included this on my previously posted list. i played this once at about 5:45 am as the sun was coming up at the tail end of an overnight radio show and, as corny/pretenious as this sounds, it was a remarkably uplifting moment that left me smiling for the rest of the day.

Hey Turtles how was Toure's Savane ?
Knowing his previous , hoping it was a great 'last one' from the man ...
I really liked it, thought it was strong and interestingly varied throughout. I feel kind of guilty though, because I only ever heard about him when he died, then went and checked out his stuff and really liked it. So I can't speak too much about relative quality compared to his other works, but if his previous works were considerably better than this then I really need to hear them!

Cheers Leo, that's exactly the kind of situation I'd like to hear that song in, preferably on a beach somewhere... :)

Also, the grime mixtapes were massive, but - like someone else said - none were cohesive enough to end up in this post. Guns and Roses 2 included.

Have to add the Audiojack remix of Paul Woolford and Bobby Peru's Erotic Discourse!
Takes the originals cold metal ping-pong madness to a whole new level. The most metallic track since Quoth? Though its cuter, less brutal. Not a bad thing.

Also

Guy Gerber & Shlomi Aber - Sea of Sand
They get entirely Jean Michel Jarre with it!

The Age of Steam - Disco Mafia - Mason remix
If you're not there before the breakdown, you'll be there after it.

Re: Ali Farka Toure - Savanne

I really liked it, thought it was strong and interestingly varied throughout. I feel kind of guilty though, because I only ever heard about him when he died, then went and checked out his stuff and really liked it. So I can't speak too much about relative quality compared to his other works, but if his previous works were considerably better than this then I really need to hear them!

I thought it was excellent. Quite a lot more varied than the other albums I have by him, which is not necessarily a good or a bad thing, it just has a more diverse range rather than a tight focus. In parts its really rich and grand, powerful and overt, which is really interesting, as the others I have are generally softer and more delicate, and more minimalist I suppose. I love him either way, and would strongly recommend you going out and buying any number of his other albums. I haven’t heard much of his really early releases from the 70s though, I should blatantly seek them out. But I haven’t heard a record by him that I don’t love.

He truly was a great, but if you enjoy him then I would strongly recommend you delving into the incredibly rich heritage that is Malian music… Toumani Diabete, Rokia Traore, Boubacar Traoré, Oumou Sangaré, Salif Keita (the list could go on). Ali Farka Toure seems to be much more visible (I guess because of the Ry Cooder collaboration), but there are so many phenomenal artists out there under the wider radar. That was the music that soundtracked a lot of my 2005, along with a bit of afrobeat and highlife.

n.b. – if you’re looking into Salif Keita then go for either his early stuff with Les Ambassadeurs, or his last 2 albums, in the intermediate period there are some shocking recordings... painful, midi-based commercialism. But Moffou is a masterpiece.

massive late addition to my list: Larry Heard ft Mr White -- The Sun Can't Compare. Luciano stretched this out over 15 minutes (multiple restarts) at Fabric last week, I'd never heard it before, my jaw was on the floor. found it yesterday. oh yes.
