I vaguely remember Mala saying that not releasing a track makes it more persistent in your memory. I guess it becomes mythic in a way. Same with 'Changes'.

this is something i definitely feel. with Changes in particular my feelings about a release were very ambiguous, at a personal level a big part of me wanted it to stay as a hazy memory of certain nights, sets, feelings etc. and that should apply equally with this one, which with Changes and Anti-War Dub are probably the tunes which most evoke certain things for me. but with this one for some reason im just really happy that its coming out.

btw a better place to hear it is on this set - http://www.getdarker.com/audio/sets/Kode_9_b2b_Mala_-_Rinse_FM_01-01-2005/ gets pulled about half an hour in i think. without the first half of the tune i don't think the second makes so much sense

also very pleased to see Miracles coming, very very deep tune. loads of Mala dubs i'd still like to see, Livin Different, Unexpected and Shirt & Tie (with Anti-Social?) especially. that one with the horns too

seems like his music is moving in quite a different direction now though, increasingly dystopian :(

I didn't had a chance to hear a recent set from him. I hope you're wrong

We know the man is a big fan of house, I'd like to hear his take on it :)

"Save Me Dub" is another incredible Mystikz tune I'd like to see on vinyl. It's on their John Peel set from 2004 (check Barefiles).

What do you mean 'dystopian'?

When is this Kode/Mala set from?

This tune is... alright. Last time I saw Mala DJing on his own he was playing pretty techy stuff...

Well I guess the first thing I should say is that my interpretations are personal, I'm not trying to say that they necessarily reflect artistic intention or mindstate or anything like that (they in fact definitely reflect my personal mindstate when in attendance of dubstep nights of late).

I mean that the feelings I get from his newer tunes resonate as a negative reflection of society (or possibly micro-society, e.g. rave). So wheras say (an obvious example) to me Anti-War Dub is eutopian in that it focuses on positive aspirations for society, on the creation of better ways of relating to one another (and at one point I think it actualised or reflected that within certain spaces - i.e. dmz/dubstep raves at that time were literally demilitarised, plur, on a level etc), the feeling I get from the new stuff I hear is quite the opposite... i.e. it feels like a reflection of very grim circumstance.

The feelings I get from that new techy stuff are alienation and atomisation... my understanding of dystopia (maybe more accurately anti-eutopia). Miracles has those similar feelings, but there is still (maybe) kind of a hopeful tone, or at least I feel that I'm left hanging onto something, but say that really big tune with the third drop that no-one ever expects, it feels much less so...

Dystopian or bleak are not in themselves bad things, often incredibly interesting in art (probably more so than eutopian!), but I find it a raw pill to swallow cos not many musicians have made me feel so positive about possibilities as he has.

Having made all of the personal qualifications, I think there is something significant to be said about how this all relates to the themes which come out from the narrative content of his tracks, conceptions of Babylon, unity, roots etc

That's all very interesting. When I got into dubstep, Mala was one of the few dubstep producers who's tunes could be described as somewhat euphoric or blissful. Producers like Martyn, Quest and Silkie are perhaps more on that tip now.

I wonder if you're right to detect this change in mood? I need to hear some of these new tracks in order to comment, really. Look at tunes like 'Bury the Boy' or 'Hunter', though... even tunes like 'Lean FWD', and there's a lot of darkness/melancholy there.

I wonder if DJing all over the place has had an effect on his production outlook, too... I shudder to think of Mala going down the same road that Dillinja et al. did when they started spending as much time playing out as they did in the studio. Like I said, I've seen Mala play a few times where he's played extremely functional stuff when I was expecting something deeper.

the clip doesn't do the tune justice at all in my view. i've heard it out a few times now and it's really beautiful... that lead synth doesn't dictate the vibe at all as you might expect from that clip

me b2b pangaea b2b brackles on tonights ruffage show, 8-10pm on www.subfm.com

yeh i agree, i wouldn't claim to impose any of that linear progression on him, as i said i think it reflects more on the scene's fall from grace in my eyes, and my general tendency towards seeing social dynamics as quite bleak in our day and age

but the narratives in some of those tunes remain
