i like that song on their album that sounds strokes-ish. and the one thats the current (?) single i think. the rest just kinda washes right over me. still cant remember any of it. i do like their guitar lines though.

(sigh) I couldn't possibly have more contempt for Pitchfork. How does having access to the Mute/SubPop catalogues entitle them to annoint themselves kings of music-geek elitists?? Or worse: indie elitists? They just did a piece on Gang of Four... now I like GoF, but by now they've become a bumper sticker that poseurs wear on their foreheads.

Also, Vampire Weekend: mediocre and generic at best; at worst: studio-manufactured indie pop targeting the post-emo demographic.

Some of the specialist columnists like Philip Sherburne's are really good, and the odd interesting writer like Tom Ewing contributes a review now and again. Stylus was waaaay better though. (RIP)

also: Arcade Fire is absolute dreck. No one likes Arcade Fire (except David Bowie!). When will Pitchfork realize this?!

I quite like a few songs on the Vampire Weekend album. I do find that listening to the entire thing causes all the songs to blend into one. I think they've played the 'African influences' card a bit too much; I find it's hardly noticeable on most of their songs.

No one likes Arcade Fire.

I wish this was true. What compounded my utter incomprehension of their hype was meeting actual REAL LIFE people who love Arcade Fire! Plus, they all seem to give me looks of utter astonishment when I declare that I don't really like Arcade Fire. If only there were a way for me to cure my blatant mental disfunction.

Sad to admit it, but the first song on Arcade Fire's first album, 'Tunnels', with the tsk-tsk disco beat, the track-long build of momentum & the lyrics about becoming feral snow-children, was kindof amazing. They were pottering along quite nicely until that second album when it became increasingly apparent that their lead singer was probably the worst & most pretentious lyricist & singer in the entire history of recorded music & they decided to shuck all the delicate chamber-pop bits & whimsy to save the world by becoming a kindof amateur-hour U2.

i enjoyed this record, it's a good little pop record with a few allusions to highlife guitar and smart lyrics and there's not much wrong with that.
all this sneerings a bit pointless, what do you want, what do you expect what are your parameters for pop success!?

I quite like Cape Cod Cassava and I'd probably enjoy the album. The lyrics are good, and the hook/riff is catchy which is all you need from a good pop song. Wouldn't buy it though, rather save the money for something I really like. All the hype about being influenced by highlife kind of gets on my tits though - because to judge from that single, it seems a relatively superficial engagement at best with a fraction of the technical dexterity.

it seems to me to be more influenced by the people saying the smiths have a highlife influence if ya get me.

this is really nice!

they're a romantic bunch

tho' animal collective (synth kicks and general indie nouveau rave throbbiness) and dirty projectors (singing on 'i think you're a contra') have messed with their mojo a bit. and maybe even kanye (self-reflexive auto-tune on california english)

i suppose it wasn't likely they would release an lp which was more lo-fi than their debut (watch those pernicious record-company inserted engineers) - but somehow i would have liked them to have tried.

some really beautiful, almost tear-inducing moments of beauty.
