1999 was just a lot of kerfuffle about 2000 in my memory but the 1990s as a whole were the favourite decade of my life so far.

No, it's all just mush, the 2000s and 2010s, it's all one to me.

But I think that more about function of my age than anything else.

Linbah and version probably think the 2000s were really good

If you look at red carpet events from the 2000s then you suddenly realise they were actually quite different to the 2010s. The outfits were insane,

Always surprised that the Avon guy didn't do more stuff. Did that role as well as Stringer and is super handsome but Elba became a superstar and he... well he turns up every now and again I guess.
I watched Paid in Full last night and thought he was great in it.

I saw him in something else where he plays a small-time drug dealer who receives a huge (a few ks anyhow) of coke intended for a neighbour cos the delivery guy is a permanently stoned waster - a comedy caper in which the guy who sent it and local dealers who wanna purchase it and maybe another party are all trying to locate the package - with hilarious* consequences. He's fine in that, does the job which is asked of him as well as could be expected. I forget the name of the film though.

*in fact mildly diverting

It's funny how the Wire has become crap in my head because of 1) Luka saying it is 2) David Simon being annoying on twitter 3) dunno why else

But I'm pretty sure if I started rewatching it I'd be head over heels again

It's suffering from the Obama Liberal association. 'Prestige Television'.

started to watch it again a year or so ago and despite having loved it at the time, and told everyone i know how great it was that it was the greatest thing of all time, how it was a marxist depiction of the world etc etc, i thought it was kind of patronizing. really felt like people from the outside looking in, which strangely is the exact opposite of what i thought the first time round, which is that i thought it felt accurate and realistic. but the second time round i felt like i could see the imagination of the 'liberal' writers filling in the blanks.

Some of the people involved were genuinely dealers/police but I know what you mean, although it's difficult to tell how much is coming from the show and how much is coming from awareness of its critical reception. It's established as this cultural landmark nowadays, with a set of opinions and responses you're supposed to have when you watch it, and that kind of thing immediately puts some people's backs up.

It has this heavy-handed preachiness thing going on, and there are whole storylines (hamsterdam, the fake serial killer) which are clearly there as a soapbox for the writer's to stand on.

Agreed that its reputation/prestige has made it harder to love. It wasn't unknown when I got into it, was already being hyped etc. but I remember feeling like I was in on something a bit secret when I binged the whole 3 or 4 first seasons in a matter of weeks.
