wonky

Don't really see the problem here, I like using them, including half tongue-in-cheek, I think their range and breath of inspiration is wicked - funky , drum and bass, 8-bar, lovers rock, jungle, garage, niche - I think the best thing about them is how silly, tangential or abstract they are or can be. I think aquacrunk is a great, silly sub-genre name.

Obviously if people start militantly splitting up nights or partitioning record labels or whatever as a result that's stupid but a small amount of music nerds (dissensians included) messing around with some names in chatting to each other....don't really get the perceived harm? If you are interested in the music you will get involved and wade through the dreck to the good stuff. Music is rich, varied, inter-related enough to support some playful sub-genres that'll be gone in a year or two... And if they are not gone in a year or two and big then fair play.

again, it's just the trivial fact that i like the aesthetics of the word 'aquacrunk' - it's the kind of word you'd make up if you were taking the piss :)

Ive said elsewhere on here... we made aquacrunk up because we were taking the piss. It's not a scene or anything... just a funny word which seemed to make sense when we were describing Rustie's music for a press release for a Numbers party in London called 'Donna'.

the Guardian article removes the pisstake angle from the word and all of a sudden its some sorta scene... quite funny really... but still needs a pinch of salt.

i think the whole name thing's funny. did an interview with zomby [albiet an email one; he doesn't do phone], and he came out with the line "i smoke a high-grade skunk spliff and get wonky".

Just to add further to the confusion, Megasoid and Lunice, who Frere-Jones talks about in his New Yorker piece, use the term TurboCrunk.
I like a LOT of the music i've heard thats been associated with the term Wonky, I'm not sure it was the best choice of name, but hell, its not putting me off.
Did anyone mention Lazer Sword?

would also say it's a scene that encourages mixing speed and styles rather than one style and speed in a set. Tracks old and new as well, so for me there is a bit of a renaissance to that time just before house/techno/hip hop became separate and there were enough good records out there to do whole nights of genres .

hmm interesting, was it the lack of records or a crowd that didnt want to hear the tempo or style of music all night. a typical night might be soul-> hip hop-> house/techno->soul-> couple of slow jams at the end.

I dont have a problem with people using wonky as a description of the music. Im sure we've had wonky used in techno terms too. But wonky makes me think of bonkers which make me think of

not good.

happy hardcore is inherently wonky in the synth sounds it uses to be fair. that's it, I'm going to say Hixxy & Sharkey are a strong influence on Zomby from now on.

Intelligent / sophisto / coffee-table wonky = wanky

Ironically detached wonky = winky

Mnml wonky = dinky

Scouse techno wonky = donky!
