If you're interested in graphical scores that leave a lot of freedom to the performer, Treatise by Cornelius Cardew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treatise_(music)) is probably one of the most important works.

i just heard a version of treatise which seems to be a quartet or something with a more traditional jazz sound and electronics - SO BEAUTIFUL IT CHANGED MY FUCKING DNA.
