bandz ahoy
I'd like to see a top 10 deep tech 2015 from someone. Sure there's still good stuff coming out of that.

Would like to see lists from trilliam/slackk/griftert and of course luka

BREAKING NEWS! LATE CONTENDER FOR GIG OF THE YEAR!

Islam Chipsy & EEK last night at LCMF. 2 drum kits, 1 synth - absolute fire. I don't ever think I've seen a midweek gig at at a University go off like a 90s drum and bass rave. If you don't know "Kahraba", get to know:

ah fuck, and i meant to go to that but was about to pass out from tiredness so didn't grab a ticket. argh. How long did they play for? - I know there was loads of other stuff onbeforehand that i wasn't so interested in, hence my decision not to go....

I don't know - about 40 minutes and an encore? I was enjoying myself so much I kinda lost track of time. I caught some of the earlier stuff and it was okay, interesting enough but didn't really move me hugely. So it was very funny to see the audience for what had previously been an experimental/classical gig GO THE FUCK OFF. I remember looking around at one point and everyone was dancing, whooping, clapping. It really did remind me of an old school rave, and this was an effect of the crazy music/performance. It was so exuberant it was impossible to resist.

sounds great. sigh. their gig at the tufnell park dome earlier this year (?) looked amazing too

I don't think I was aware of him back then.

I don't know much electro/chabbai stuff at all. Would welcome some knowledge dropped! John Doran has written some great pieces for The Quietus, and there's a bunch of mental Youtube videos, I'll link some when I get a moment.

Kinda related - there's a nice Dabke comp on Sham Palaces, super sad to listen to when you think of what's happening out there now.

the electro chaabi film is worth checking out from a few years back...

there was a mumdance grime x chaabi sort of mixtape around the same time but i dont remember thinking it was that special at the time (though hearing egyptian mcs on eskimo obv has a certain novelty appeal)

this is good too -

but this is closer to idk, reggaeton, than the islam chipsy stuff, which sounds much more beserk.

This one - Tbh I've only listened to the same stuff as rdr has. And yeah, John Doran's columns tipped me off to quite a lot of North African music - his columns in the Guardian always have about 4-5 gems.

I remarked on this last year but it's still weird to me that this forum spends the whole year discussing normal music then end of year lists are dry as dust wire reader lists. Its so strange.

Wow, there's a lot more out there than I thought, going through it all should keep me busy for a bit.

Again, I'd recommend Divine Council for something sonically similar and Slug Christ for something culturally similar. You seem to know a lot more of this stuff than me, so you may already be well acquainted with the two.

Thanks man, I don't know Divine Council; Slug Christ did one of my tunes of the year, definitely. He's really good, then awful, then really good lol.

The best thing I heard all year wasn’t even released, in this form. There was an mp3 of Yakuta Riddim but it has 808 claps on it and isn’t nearly as good. This is a rip from Rinse. I love everything about it. I love Novelist going “Are you sick in the face; bang to the jawside. and this one’s like crack cocaine to the nasal, or the airlobe. Hold tight all my Ghanian uncles rocking sandals right now. and it’s real.” I love it.

Novelist : Yakuta Riddim (angel mix)

Two of my most played songs this year was actually from 2014 :

Lil Reese : So Fast

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/SnyldtUoDUs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and Slug Christ’s “On it”

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Oxf22SGGG8s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

which were closely followed by

Capo : Don’t Matter

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XaMGIEYjRcw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and this little treat from Portsmouth, I think they’re from

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/zYJ7ea_RSKs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Best grime single ended up going to Pres T, mainly for the beat, which sounds like a sample from the Eurythmics.

Best grime video was easily “Side by Side”. I wish the video hadn’t come out 4 months after the song, but at least they got it done.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8fIAjwYhxDY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I also wish that had charted.

It was obviously Young Thug’s year. My favourite was “Numbers”

Listened to lots and lots of that heroin cloud rap stuff, Night Lovell / Xavier Wulf, $uicideBoy$, basically Trillphonk’s youtube (see earlier on in the thread and what sadmanbarty said.)

Special mention goes out to Young Dot/ZVPH XLLXS for the XCXD instrumental what turned into “Garage Skank” I reckon, and I also really like this thing, I especially like that’s it’s pretty much impossible to search for them.
