why is ambient so popular now

Obviously depends how you define ambient, but I have been thinking of the current trend as being influenced by: 1) An progression of the minimal techno scene of the mid-to-late noughties (see ILX's annual minimal house bobbins threads and I think there were equivalents here too). I remember...

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

Watched Sakuran last night, an adaptation of a manga of the same name, which was very enjoyable. If required to give a glib description I would say it's a mix of Memoirs of a Geisha and Marie Antoinette, but the end result is better than that sounds. The story is of a young girl sold into a...

    Festivals

I expect ticket holders are quite a way down the pecking order when it comes to dishing out any funds baselogic have left, legally speaking. Time to put in those paypal/credit card/debit card claims I think...

We went down to Bloc pretty early, managed to get onto Stubnitz and stayed there for hours and hours in the Boiler Room showcase. Made the mistake of getting off the boat about midnight, having had no idea of the chaos in between. Left shortly afterwards. There was so much wrong with the...

    UK Soul : Soundsystem Classics

Cheers for posting that link - not heard it before but do have the DJ Milo compilation which has the live excepts, and can confirm that it is worth tracking down. This is the one: http://www.discogs.com/Various-The-Wild-Bunch/release/123867

Morven is one of my favourite movies even having read the book first. Interesting that you pick out the club scene - I think its one of the better depictions of a club in a movie. I remember reading an interview with the director in Dazed and Confused back when the film came out when she was...

    "R'n'B" recommendations PLEASE!?

New free The-Dream album sounding pretty good... http://radiokillarecords.com/ More tripped out tunes and fewer Love King pop hooks.

    The Weeknd

Oh really? I thought So Far Gone had a fair bit of that beatless meandering stuff on it, and came out before Love vs. Money. I agree that 40's production shares a particular style with with The-Dream though.

Films you've seen recently and would unreservedly recommend:

Caught Pina 3D last weekend, which along with the recent Herzog, is slowly persuading me that while it's an imperfect technology, 3D may have some longer term merit after all.

    wonderful graffiti

Haha, I wish. Just a namesake! Was impressed to see he's still up, even in 2011 (not my photo though): This is an impressive act of Parisian vandalism utilising plenty of paint and a fire extinguisher (...if you can make it past the cheesey intro - damage starts at about 2 minutes 30 seconds):

    wonderful graffiti

I'm not much of a photographer, but been taking lots of pics of tags and trackside graffiti round London/West Midlands/Bristol over the last few months: http://illegallybombed.tumblr.com

    "R'n'B" recommendations PLEASE!?

Any mention of The Weekend? Two tracks linked on the Drake blog recently and seen few bits pop up elsewhere too (including a more tuneful track called Loft Song). Kind of reminds me of Successful - stripped back beat and half singing...

    "R'n'B" recommendations PLEASE!?

Been listening to this on Spotify all week. Quality record. Not sure there's an individual track as catchy as I Luv Your Girl, but as a whole it seems like a better album than Love Hate.

    Fish Tank

I liked this movie. Solid script, good cast, well shot and a good soundtrack (particularly Cassie and Wiley). I don't live far enough east (E1) to know how it compares with real life out towards Barking. Be good to hear from Luka etc.
