edit: although, of course, it should also be said that anyone believing players pick which side to play for based on any reason other than money - or certainly anything as improbable as love - should hire full-time minders, as they're too naive to be let out in public.
the cynical approach is healthy and all, but l don't think it's that black and white.

"I can't blame ITV for randomly wandering off for some adverts mid way through the second half of extra time. And missing the goal..."
Didn't the same thing happen with the Superbowl on some networks the other day - except that it wasn't adverts they cut to but a close up of a man getting a blow job? I think that's hilarious, after the Janet Jackson thing they are being super careful - ok everyone concentrate no nudity, no nudity, no nudity oh no we've just cut to a hardcore porn film while the game is still on, that's the last thing we wanted to do.

"Torres and Gerrard injured? Time for Robbie Keane to...ah."
Ha ha.

yes Ashley Cole is still motivated by the good old days :D

of course i jest. the thing that makes the Robbie Keane saga particularly worrisome is you have to feel extra sympathy for the bloke, it seems to me, given he was a boyhood Liverpool fan. that rejection just seems crueler. if he was a Bournemouth or Cobh fan i would mind less, i think.

Benitez: OH DEAR. i was having a real time txt conversation with an Evertonian pal this morning about 3:30 and it started with his Bit pissed to be honest.

congrats to Burnley, again.

Prem Team all your base belong to us. (albeit the latest 'merely' WBA.)

my Smethwick mate won't thank me for that bracketed comment.

i was going to shake my head at the ever vocal Eboue, but then remembered the crazy kid likes being a tiger in his spare time and thought better of it.

(yes Emmanuel, real tigers are a big feature of London house parties.)

even when Bellamy manages to avoid anything controversial in match time he still does something that has the air of a big fat tool about him; witness his taunting as 'Boro trooped off the pitch at Mideastlands.

let's hope Tony Adams gets some peace and quiet now then.

p.s.
Chelsea.

ho-ho.

Amazing how quickly Chelsea have started to believe that they almost have a right to be the best - to the extent that they think that if they come runner up in the league and the champions league it can only be due to a defect of the manager. I think that put Scolari in all but impossible position from the start, especially as he hasn't got the money to spend that his predecessors had. Weird that after spending so much money over the last few years they can be so light in attack.

Don't buy players at the top of the downslope, buy them on the way up.

And when you do buy them on the way up, make sure they're good.

That's footie management sorted. Lunchtime.

so when you say chelsea there, do you mean the fans, the owner, or what?

cuz scolari's got countless things wrong since he's taken the job, and none of them are to do with a lack of funds.

I meant the fans who sing "you don't know what you're doing" the second that something doesn't meet their over high expectations. Seems a bit weird to say that to the only manager in the league who ever has won or is ever likely to win the world cup. I do accept that there are differences between international (and especially Brazilian) and club management though.

i didn't sing it, but those who did had every right. he's either a fucking moron, or he doesn't care. i suspect it's a bit of both.

quaresma was our best player yesterday; every bit of good we had came from him taking people on and putting crosses in. scolari in all his years of wisdom readies drogba, the player who'll benefit most from that service, and takes quaresma off for him so the anonymous anelka can go to the wing. then takes ballack off, who was the second best player out there.

it's nothing to do with thinking we've a god-given right to win anything - maybe the gloryhunters who turned up a few years ago, but they don't sit in the matthew harding. it's watching a manager continue to not learn from his mistakes, continue to strip the team of width when it's blindingly obvious that's what it needs*, and continue to look like he doesn't give a shit. he's the worst manager we've had since i've been watching football, and the most uninspiring figure i think i've seen represent us at a footballing level (obviously some of the boardroom scum speak for themselves) since i've been going to games, which is about 13 years now- since i was 10.

*put v simply: our most reliable attacking outlets are cole and bosingwa; they need proper wingers to support them so they can commit forward. kalou and malouda just cut inside- the former cuz he's a striker, the second cuz he's an idiot. that congests the area where ballack and lampard are meant to lurk, and where anelka likes to cut back to- thus it alienates cole and bosingwa, and cuts out half the space for those three. there's talk of an overhaul, but a pair of wingers would cover up the cracks til that's possible.

Interesting what you say about Ballack - The Observer's 'fan's report' thingy graded him 3/10 for the match. Is he so loathed that he can't do any right? Or is that just two wildly but coincidentally different opinions of the same match?

that's ludicrous. not a great first half but really stepped it up in the second, and the 'don't know what you're doing' turned to 'fuck off scolari' chants when he was taken off.

he's not loathed at the bridge - i think everyone accepts that it was a poor transfer because it helped ruin the dynamic of a team that won two titles on the spin, but he's always worked really hard, played very well, and the period where he captained us through the winter where everyone was injured really endeared him to everyone.

bbc ones seem a bit more sensible- quaresma top, then lampard, then hilario, terry and ballack all on roughly the same. lampard was anonymous, but he'll always get a six minimum for being there. terry was very good, probably would've lost without him.

Fuck me.

Looks like Tom's got his wish

Chelsea have sacked their manager Luiz Felipe Scolari after just seven months in the job. The Brazilian took over from Avram Grant last summer but the club have failed to sustain a serious challenge for the Premier League title and are currently seven points adrift of the leaders Manchester United in fourth place.

"The Chelsea board would like to place on record our gratitude for his time as manager," said Chelsea in a statement. "Felipe has brought many positives to the club since he joined and we all feel a sense of sadness that our relationship has ended so soon. Unfortunately the results and performances of the team appeared to be deteriorating at a key time in the season."

now we just need rid of wilkins, and a swat team of adams and kinnear can lead the march to 5th.

:D Wilkins as 'caretaker'? :slanted: 'Kin' hell. I thought the season would be interesting with Scolari...but this is ridiculous. May as well give Adams a call...

Apparently one of the names they are considering is..... Avram Grant!
This from my friend who told me that he was sacked, he sits right by the sports desk of a national paper.
