I'm down with CD's too. have some very carefully constructed mixes to trade. with cover artwork of course. and dipped in PCP.

No more excuses then. That's good to hear.

Keep in mind that whatever you put together should be specific to this swap. The mix should be something specially constructed for your fellow Dissensian, whoever ever he/she might be.

when i've been involved in similar enterprises before, there's been a double swap (ie you make two CDs the same for two different recipients). That way, not much more effort but double the benefits...

Actually, sorry, I'll have to withdraw from this due to timings
I think you've misunderstood the deadlines, martin.

To be clear:

Deadline for sign-up = February 8th. That's tomorrow.

Deadline for tape to be sent = March 30th. That's in six (6) weeks time.

just to piss on everybodys birthday cake - i don't really see the appeal if cdrs are involved.
we all get billions of cds and mp3s all the time. i thought this was the 'ferrite love connection'!
show me the love..

yeah must say i'm hoping for a cassette and that'll be what im making definitely.
is it worth cd people joining? what if they get a tape in return, how do they play it?
i'm in favour of no-exceptions tape / cd segregation. start your own mirrored beer-mat swap on another thread!!!

In principle, I would agree; I also want a tape. However, as the person who has taken on organizing this thing, I feel I have to balance my purist desires with the technological reality. The reality seems to be that a large number of Dissensians who are eager to share their music in this swap have no access to a tape recorder. I am keen to protect to the spirit of the Cassette Swap, and yet I don't want to exclude people lacking the requisite technology.

As I said before, it seems to me that issue is time. CDs are too easy to whip up, while tapes require some planning. If one constructs a CD in the same manner as a tape, meaning from hard copies of source music (i.e. not crap mp3s), one track at a time, with care and love, then what is the difference really?

I think it's also important to consider that this swap is not an open loop. If one receives an ill-considered CDR obviously burned from sub-standard mp3s, then one is fully within one's rights to write a scathing review. In fact, I would encourage everyone to be thinking very critically about what they send and receive.

To those sending CDRs I say this: You will very likely be held to a higher standard than those sending tapes. This is only because you will have to convince the purists of your sincere aspirations to analogue-ness.

Having said all that, if anyone is absolutely opposed to receiving either a CD or a tape, just email me and I will do my best to accomodate you.

BTW, monkeyblood, have you signed up yet?

Whenever I’m asked to make CDs/send tracks to friends, I always either mix the tracks properly or merge them all into one long WAV-file (i.e. one track). This is a good way of forcing them to listen to the whole lot (the ADD generation and all that, you know).

I could do both/either, and tape recorders cost, what, $10? The one advantage to CDs is the efficiency. Since I'd be interested in getting mixes from most of the people on here, in the interest of time I think going digital would be fine by me, if that means people are going to make *more* mixes on CD than they would otherwise.

Just my 2 cents. Tell me what to do and I'll do it.

ok, so CD's are allowed?

i'm in...

i only own like 50 mp3's, so rest assured my mix will be off vinyl recorded to cd in the format of a mix tape...

I would definitely be up for this if it was all-original material. Was reading a while ago about a guy who makes music, puts it onto tape or CD, then just leaves it in a public place. He claimed to have stalked people then written music specifically for them, then hidden it on their property. The idea of finding this piece of music and having a completely unmediated experience of listening to it appeals...

yeh chef, i did sign up. right when you announced the second wave.
i took part in the first one too for that matter.

so if the people who couldn't join in beacause they haven't tape decks get a tape, what are they gonna do?
does that not mean the tapes will just go to the 'tape people' and essentially divide the thing anyway? am i just being a pain in the arse?

Reminds me of the Fermata by Nicholson Baker when he writes erotic stories for specific people, hides the stories where they will find them and then watches the lucky object of his affection reading them. All this being facilitated by the fact that he can freeze time.
Anyway, fuck it I'm in, dunno how well my unmixed "mix" will be appreciated but I'll email you now Mr Napalm.
