Really? No. From every time I listen/read Mala's words he seems oblivious to what's gone on in something he helped create. Not that he should feel like "THE DUBSTEP SCENE" is his to parent but... You know... I'd like him to be a little bit more involved. Because then you get this Skream/Benga tragedy, and I get the feeling that Mala's sitting in Pokes car going "I wonder why everyone got so mad?"..

yeah but they are friends, so for mala to try and tell then what to play or not invite them wouldnt be appropriate. maybe its better to leave it up to skream and benga to make their own mind up about whether it was a mistake or not after the reaction they got?

personally i really dislike the stuff skream and benga are playing but in fairness there is another room to cater for different tastes

and on a musical level i think mala is still representing the original dubstep vibe - look at deep medi - maybe he's just happy to do his own thing without taking on the role as a leader of "true dubstep" - also god knows he might have enjoyed skream and bengas set

I've always felt that despite how central he and dmz have been to everything, Mala has always been on something different to everyone else. Not that 'broken dub house' thing as such but it always feels like Mala tunes are his own and no one else makes anything like him.

Its always set a part when I hear them they don't feel like the rest. You would forget its dubstep.
Shackleton was probably the only other one like this but even his sound has imitators now, Mala has none.

Good interview here as well where he talks more about vibes then scenes. Says it all.

sometimes
Kode and now Loe have both moved away though haven't they.
Loefah at least is still releasing or being affiliated with a bit more of a classical sound.

As for other OGs, Pinch and Younx are definitely keeping with the original aesthetic.

most important thing to remember is that while one side are defending wobble or whatever and the others are wiyning about keeping dubstep pure and like 94-5 and all that ( which they were probably not ever privy to anyway) loefah, kode9 and james blake and moxie in the other room all actually played experimental peak time sets which contained barely any trace of either side of this classic internet binary battle line.
As ever, the reality cuts through and everyone is too busy affecting imaginary ideological standpoints to notice.

its a very good point - but you could argue that james blake, loefah and kode 9 may hold far less appeal than they did for some precisely because what they are playing is clearly not dubstep

it's a bit insulting to describe people wanting to keep dubstep pure as whining. a lot of people still have an appetite for and make "dubstep" and see dmz as the spiritual home of that kind of music. they want to go for the experience of listening to heavy sub bass in a dark room, undisturbed by flailing teenage moshers.

i guess the sad thing is that i would have thought out of anywhere dmz would have been the place where you can do that

yeah but the whole DMZ as the church of dubstep thing doesnt make sense to me,

thats what dubstep fans have made it

from what I can see Mala, Loefah etc have always pushed the sound forward and never stated it was the 'ivory tower' of dubstep, protecting a sound etc

its what dubstep fans have created, the myth, in some ways what some people would call religion,
what followers think the Creator wants, not necessarily what the Creator wants?

and of course Mala is going to want Skream & Benga to play, theyre his fucking mates and have been there from day dot, support your supporters etc

this is all totally true and the way things has turned out is kind of unavoidable, its a shame for those who enjoy the "deep" dubstep experience though.

i always thought mala might do a "deep medi" spin off thing, like when he did a deep medi night in manchester, amongst other places - which aims to provide that kind of vibe all night. it would have to be perhaps smaller and lower key but there are plenty of DJ's who would fit the bill

the programming of the em is so bizarre. do want to stay up for k9's but 3am start?? ironically it seems more likely that you'll catch it at at better hour sick boy. The two hours of hard house between 1 and 3 seeming pretty unappealing.

That Goth-Trad mix is great, such a interesting producer to listen to. Always has some wicked ideas technically, you can tell he is a hardware nerd.
