i always thought that was the entire point of repression on a micro level (think of victorian fetishes like corsets--bondage gear if anything ever was), to make sex more taboo.
there are all sorts of post-feminists writing about how my generation doesn't enjoy sex anymore because it's too ubiquitous and they've become too desensitized by the early availability and prevalance of internet porn
I think it's to do with sex never being an of-the-moment experience, but to its association with past activity, so that every sexual activity becomes something viewed as gain toward a past experience, fetishism is re-living the experience, thus if we live in a recorded society each sexual experience is quantifiable in terms of gain ( read as psychic economic activity ).
But I'm really tired.
