has anybody got any sources for some of this 80's London dancehall stuff talked about in the Lezlee Lyrix interview? Saxon, Ghettotone? maybe even this famed Lewisham Boys Club clash that got recorded? i'm intrigued....

  • Sounds of The Universe, Broadwick Street W1
  • Selectadisc, Berwick Street W1
  • Rough Trade East, 'Dray Walk' Old Truman Brewery 91 Brick Lane London E1

Good, that's what i've been waiting for.

That clash has done the rounds on mp3 so I will try and up it later in the week.

Your best start would probably be Saxon Studio International - Coughing Up Fire (Greensleves CD) which is a professionally recorded live session.

See also some of the mixes Paul Meme and me did:

Notably Lyric Maker and the Fast Chat mix for Dave Stelfox.

Got mine today. Like above poster, only had a chance to flick as I have to be off the minute my girlfriend is out the shower, but it looks excellent. I really enjoyed the Chunky Bizzle/Maniac/Young Dot piece and the Skepta interview, and the ten bad man commandments were incredible...

the Lyric Maker mix is sublime, as is the pitchfork article - do you have a tracklisting? all the links on your blogspot have given up the ghost.

praises for Woofah again btw, Skepta interview has been one of the highlights for sure...can't wait 'til the album drops

any requests you have btw i'll try and fill them, unless you are also a member of puregrime.co.uk haha

Just got this, looks interesting.

Re Gabriel's 'Badman Commandments':
(i) It seems pretty sure that Wayne Wonder is basing his views on Tom Sawyer on the film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (where he's a secret service agent, apparently)!
(ii) We all know why Elephnat Man doesn't like Brokeback Mountain, and it ain't got nothing to do with the quality of the cinematography....why skirt around it?

good knowledge, i had no idea about that - can feature an update on this one in the next set of ten commandments...

well exactly, it didn't seem necessary to explain it - and i wasn't about to launch into a debate about the homophobia of dancehall artists in a 500 word piece. what should i have said, "elephant man here outlines his disinclination to watch a gay love story, thus demonstrating his deep-seated and objectionable homophobia?" actually yeah i probably should've mentioned that it's objectionable, though mainly the fact that he made a whole song about not going to watch brokeback mountain just makes me laugh

Hey Gabriel, wasn't meaning to sound pious  . You're right - it didn't really need explaining.

"elephant man here outlines his disinclination to watch a gay love story, thus demonstrating his deep-seated and objectionable homophobia?" - that would have been pretty funny, actually :)

Nah, I just thought the 'badman's guide to living one's life' was a really good idea (the Snapple one made me laugh)...did you find examples of other cinematic directives to badmen that weren't so charged?
