80's R'n'B/Electro-soul

Disco, really, but Patrice was a genius and on the edge of 80s soul and jazz. Has the clipped, clean sound of the early 80s, if not the hard-edged electro sheen. Plus we've had Sylvia Striplin on this thread, so we can have this.

I defy anyone who loves house, hardcore, jungle, R&B, 90s hip hop, or R&B not to love this sort of music. It all feeds into each other as far as I can tell. You should probably tread more carefully than I do, though, but I live by a beach, that's my excuse. I'm 100% Yacht Manqué.

In fact, exactly what Luke said at the start:

wow, how good is that aleem! one of the reasons this music sounds so good to me and resonates so strongly is that i first came across a lot of this stuff as samples in hardcore, jungle, 2-step, hiphop etc.... like the first one i posted, body fusion, i'm sure those strings were on some jungle record or other....
it also means the boundaries do blur for me, r&b, house, freestyle, electro (at least with vocals) its all r&b plus new technology.... it all sounds so good.
(can't do jazz funk though, doesn't work for me, unless the miles davis stuff counts)

Shame so many of the videos on this thread have been taken down. Wish people had listed track names/artists to go with the videos. Great thread nonetheless.

this is tremendous. TREMENDOUS.

Also the Patrice Rushen you posted above.

Some of my favourite tunes ever fall into this category - "The Finest" "Saturday Love" "Nights Over Egypt" "Got To Have Your Love"...

Yeah, that's a fantastic track. Forgot I posted it.

When you go shopping for these records you end up buying an album just for one song, like this:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/ArdT2BGevu4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The album is basically dreadful, full of bland sickly ballads, but this one song is a killer. Therefore worth £4 of your money in a Cardiff market.

Has a strange effect on women, though. When you say you like this music, they either assume you're gay or they want to shag you. Seems to be no middle ground. The latter are better, clearly.

woops

Was listening to Freeez 'I.O.U' and had that nagging thing: I know this track from somewhere else, but where? Jungle? 2-step? Then I remembered. It was this:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/fqnOi2vapj0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Back to back with Bukem, Dreamscape 1995.

Now I remember.

Kind of mad to think that the original only came out about 10 years before this, when you think how nothing sounds very different now than it did in 2004.
