thanks Tea for clearing up a bit of the German male-moon female-sun history. that has always been something of a stick in the cogs of my archetypal universalism... which i more and more realize may not be so universal! i guess i have been subscribing to Taoist definitions...

On the other hand, maybe it is universal but Germans are just wrong. (j/k)
Seriously though, it could be the case that in cultures that evolved in tropical or subtropical regions, or even somewhere like Mediterranean Europe, the sun could be seen as paternalistic because it seems to rule the natural order; that in the summer you'd better watch out, because it's a harsh and potentially hazardous, even deadly, thing. Whereas in the north of Europe, where it's cooler, wetter, cloudier - in fact pretty much dark for six months at a time in Scandinavia - the sun is more welcome whenever it appears, and seen a more life-giving rather than life-dictating phenomenon? And so more likely to be associated with the maternal.
I dunno, just a though.

oh god do they ever... it can actually be argued that they have more. because, you know, they can keep going and never have enough where as we have to get some rest for at least a couple of hours... and can not keep up the 5 t times a day schedule for long.

Heh, yeah, there is that physical aspect to take into account...though apparently it's possible for men to have multiple orgasms too (with little to no refractory period in between), but it takes a lot of rigorous training and self-discipline.

I think it can seem that women generally have a lower sex drive than men just because they're generally more selective about who and what turns them on.

I guess I should be patient because I don't think there's anyone here who studies biology or medicine.

OK, for sure, and all I quoted was a second-hand remembering of a single anecdotal report. By 'humping inanimate objects' I didn't mean she was going around looking for someone to rape, it was just a humorous way of saying 'very, very horny'. Maybe the testoserone caused the release of a whole bunch of other hormones, I dunno - as you say, I'm not a biologist. I was just asking where your intuition about it came from....

But it's considered a really, really old-fashioned and out-of-touch idea that the female sex drive comes from testosterone primarily. Female androgens like estrogen and progesterone are actually much more conclusively tied to libido in women, according to newer (better, less flawed, less biased) research. In fact, the farther away from the bias we get that all sex drive is the drive to act upon someone else sexually, the clearer it becomes that progesterone and estrogen in the balance that you tend to see around ovulation (yes, there may be small amounts of testosterone, but even adrenaline and other hormones involved as well) is the magic formula for female horniness.

..and it seems to have come from some rigorous research, which is cool. That's all I was wondering about.

it's OK! i am also a hippie! so is nomad! (she just doesnt realize it / chooses to use a different definition)

haha, yeah, I suppose you're right!

Another thing a lot of people are but would never call themselves is "progressive". A lot of Post Punk was totally progressive, just not in the ways previously associated with that word. Understandably, I guess, sometimes in order to move forward, you have to discard old names and their loaded formal associations... like Alternative, or currently, Indie.

Germans are a culture unto themselves in so many weird ways. Never knew about the sun/moon thing, though, that's interesting.

Women are actually *less* selective about what turns them on, according to the research in that article from the other thread...

I think most women don't need to "learn" how to have multiple orgasms or be disciplined into it.

A lot of male subs in S&M are able to have them, though, and also to have orgasms on command.

(About testosterone, too, I forgot to add: post-menopausal women have very high testosterone levels, and almost no estrogen and progesterone, and they report exceptionally low libido and high rates of depression compared to young menstruating women. The reason why I say "intuitive" is because endocrinology is still in the 'primitive' stages compared to many other medical sciences...)

Been meaning to post this for a few days, but keep forgetting to for some reason - people were talking (very far) upthread about psych-funk; one of the very best examples of that for me is, rather weirdly enough, the instrumental title track to Ogden's Nut Gone Flake by the Small Faces. Quite a bit ahead of its time I reckon, first half of the track has a real monster-groove, and like a lot of psychedelia, the tune is exciting just through the pure sound of it, the effects and textures used.

Well yeees, for a given meaning of "turns them on"...

What I meant was, imagine a hypothetical party or nightclub scenario with equal numbers of single straight men and single straight (ish) women, and you did a survey by asking all the men "which of these women would you have sex with?" and vice-versa. Now I would guess, purely based on my own experiences and observations, that the average number of women each man expresses an interest in would be higher than the average number of men each woman expresses an interest in. That's what I meant by "more selective".

Bear in mind that women having an increase in vaginal bloodflow while watching bonobo-porn presumably does not imply that women want to have sex with a bonobo.

sorry, to derail the bonobo/human female sex tangent we're on here, but i had a uniquely psychedelic music experience last night. i ran together a christina carter (from Charalambides) solo guitar track (think tons of tone bending and dynamic changes) with the Holy Modal Rounder's tape-manipulated acapella version of Michael Hurley's Werewolf. it had my head swimming---i swear it reactivated the doses that have been slithering around my spine. i should have it available for download sooner than later...

Bear in mind that women may not want to have sex with the bonobo from the movie, but they may be aroused and want to have sex in one form or another--with themselves or another human-- after watching bonobo sex movies.

Because women aren't so literal-minded, like children, or men, that they need a pictogram of exactly the sort of things that go on during homo sapien sex or masturbation (nor do they need painfully ugly and top lit close ups of scrotums bouncing against labia) in order to get turned on. Suggestion works.

Hell, women may even be able to abstract the bonobos right out of the movie, and not even really be thinking about bonobos when they see the bonobo sex, but instead be instantly transported to a state of arousal where they are more interested in their own sexual pleasure (usually auto-erotic) than they would be in looking at pictures of
anyone/anything.

Re being picky, Just being pickier about who you decide to fuck doesn't mean you have a lower libido. For millions of years, before you had safe, legal, accessible abortions and contraception widely available, it was women who were left holding the bag (a screaming infant) after a night of sex. The high likelihood that a child has of sharing some of its father's traits means that most women don't want to be left taking care of a little douchebag replicant. So most women try to "mate" with men they find attractive on multiple levels, not just the physical one, because they're effectively always forced into thinking about potential mates as potential fathers for their offspring. Women now are probably going to tend this way, toward being picky, due to our biology having formed around this strategy over millions of years, despite having access to better pregnancy planning methods. Men, now, as always, walk alway from a recreational sexual encounter more likely to be unscathed by said screaming infant.
