90s and 00s US house/garage

what would be in the mix?

hmm, some of...

Romanthony 'The Wanderer (beatless mix)'
Mood 2 swing 'All Night Long'
Farley Jackmaster Funk 'Farley Knows House'
Ron Trent 'Altered State'
Prana 'The Dream'
Moodyman "I Cant Kick This Feelin' and 'Mahogony'
Theo Parrish mix of Jill Scott
Abacus 'We Cooking Now'
Ten City 'All Loved Out (Joe Claussel mix)'
Herbert - something from 'Around the House'

Am I banned from including Detroit techno?

padraig (u.s.)

a monkey that will go ape
assuming we're trying to keep it more towards garage-y, vocals rather than track-y, hard/acid/etc...

Blakk Society - Just Another Day
Ce Ce Rogers - Someday
Fingers Inc. - Distant Planet
Gallifré - Don't Walk Out On Love (Dub)
Joe Smooth - Promised Land
The Night Writers - Let the Music Use You
Alison Limerick - Where Love Lives
Ragtyme - I Can't Stay Away
Ten City - That's The Way Love Is (Deep House Mix)
Photon Inc. - Generate Power (Wild Pitch)
Romanthony - The Wanderer or Bring U Up
Paperclip People - Steam
Maurizio - Domina (Carl Craig Mix)
Round Two - It's a New Day (Club Vocal)
Global Communication - The Way
Luomo - Class or Tessio
Moodymann - Tribute! (To the Soul We Lost), Inspirations From a Small Black Church...
Omar-S - Day (tons of tracks by him really but this has the most prominent vocal I could think of)
something by Rick Wade

i know this is way too many but I was hardpressed to narrow it down. also I'm not sure if it would make a good mix cos of dissimilar styles/bpms/etc.

detriot techno? no, certainly not. keep it gay.
unless you can justify it. like, this track was big in chicago or whatver.

Darned cockwombles.
Luomo - Tessio

Definitely microhouse-ish, but possibly the best track ever and the one that slays me every time, so who cares.

Fuck me, man's a genius. This would so be played at my wedding. Not that I even believe in weddings...and not that it's not heartbreaking. Did microhouse ever produce another song fit to sit alongside this?

Weird that no-one's mentioned MAW so far (I don't think) - thought they would own this thread.

Well, yeah, precisely - thread was motivated by going out to a gay bar and not beign able to go up to the DJ after every tune to ask "What the FUCK is this?". In a good way.

yeah I know a bunch of the track I named aren't garage per se but I feel like they're all motivated by that garage vibe, very much in that spirit. like Carl Craig's mix of Domina. Or "It's a New Day" (in my top ten all time) - clearly that is a record motivated by Ernestus/Von Oswald's love of vocal house, proper soulful garage stuff. to me it's a garage record. it's well gay too FWIW. tho not as gay as "I'm Your Brother".

& all that Detroit deep house stuff - Omar-S, Parrish, Moodymann, Rick Wade etc. - you couldn't call it garage as such, too eclectic, but clearly there's an influence or at least an affinity of vibe. especially w/deeper garage a la Kerri Chandler or something. I've never been sure where "garage" ends & "deep house" begins. or tribal, or in other cases progressive house, or hard house - a la Cajmere who made straight up garage records, track-y hard records & weird crossbreeds.

I lopped off a few of the less gay tracks tho.

that Global Communication track is really lovely for anyone who's not heard it. again I reckon Middleton & Pritchard's take on proper soulful US deep house. tho also it has a kind of speed garridge flavo(u)r to it with the way the vocals are chopped up.

Global Communication - The Way (Secret Ingredients Mix)

yeah, wasn't meaning the comment to be in the least critical - yours is a really good list, and i've been listening to tessio on repeat for the past two hours, so thank you for reminding me of its existence.

alsion limerick is top too. :)

This is easily the gayest record ever

Jamie Principle might say the word 'she', but he must be talking about a man (or a tranny). I love it when he says "Remember Ethiopia, feed the poor". Then finishes the sentence with an outrageously camp "I love you!"

This early Todd Edwards track has none of the Todd style samples but makes up for it with NYC house flavour

agreed on the remarks upthread concerning the wanderer -- absolutely peerless

AND HAVING JUST RE-READ THIS THREAD, I HAVE FUNNY FEELING THAT ALL RECORDS LISTED BELOW ARE IRRELEVANT TO THE DISCUSSION, AS IT SEEMS TO BE SOME KIND OF GENEALOGY OF UK GARAGE. HOWEVER, IN ANY CASE, THESE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE US HOUSE TRACKS FROM LATE 80s and EARLY 90s . . . .

MK is the best. From Detroit but lived in New York, I think.

MK - Burning

Chez Damier - Can You Feel It (NY Dub)

Chez Damier is brilliant too -- Round One - I'm Your Brother (Chicago's Twisted Mix)

Nu Groove; one of the key labels to check out -- 33 & 1-3 Queen - Searchin'

Chicago wise - Mike Dunn & Steve Poindexter are probably my favourites:

Numbskull question:
What would people say is the main distinction between US Garage and just 90s US House?
Is it primarily a geographical thing, 'garage' just designating house made in the New York/New Jersey area, or are there notable musical differences? - e.g. I've heard some people mention the drum tracks being 'bumpier' in garage, or others talk about the tunes have dubbier, more immersive production.
I'm not fingering the distinction as a false one, I've just not got my head around it yet, despite listening to a fair ammount of the stuff.
