I would love to teach the world what an arpeggiator is. But for the moment I haven't felt that I or the world see it as a pressing concern, given the time, space and inclinations involved.

In music, an arpeggio is Italian for broken chord where the notes are played or sung in sequence, one after the other, rather than ringing out simultaneously. This word comes from the italian word "arpeggi" , which means "to play on a harp". These are formed from scales, The arpeggio is based on the relative scale playing the "key" notes or those affected by the key signature.,

wiley was 21 when eskimo come out. joker, rustie, zomby etc are young. the original dubsteppers seemed to bbe about 41. should old people be banned from making dance music? are they too boring?

LOL. . . RSD's been making dubsteppish tunes from time. He must be knocking on 41.

edit : old people != boring : )

Fair enough, i cant expect you to care what an arpeggiattor is, given that it is quite a geeky muscian piece of information (see Vangelis). however, if your making an in depth analysis of Zomby and his new ep, including all manner of complex musical theory (which probably 95% of people dont "fully understand", melodic counterpoint anyone?), then it seems to me that technology is the missing point. i mean the arpeggiattor is used on every single track of his new ep, literally every lead synth line is arpeggiated chiptune sounds. these things have their own resonances as well but theyre more cultural, conotations with synth pioneer music as well as computer games etc.
interaction with technology, presets etc, has a massive influence on this kinda music, but unfortunatly isnt very interesting to read about for non-producers. didnt mean to sound bitchy in the first post btw RF, loving your work/wonk.

Zomby's all about synaesthetic textures and subtly timefucking rhythms. I don't see how a standard musicological analysis would be anything but a step back from what's interesting or exciting about his music. It needs new words.
I dunno. An analysis in terms of conventional theory would probably be limited, although it'd be an interesting exercise if only because it'd map out some of the limitations of conventional theory by trial and error.

But you could also have a more informal but still detailed 'close reading', trying to pick out what the specific details are that combine to make the textures synaesthetic and the rhythms timefucking, even if you're talking about 'the way that noise modulates through the note and then jumps to that other noise' or 'the slight delay on that hi hat as against the clap coming in a beat later than you expect' rather than talking about suspended sevenths and lydian modes and semiquavers. Which I think would be very interesting, albeit still not about to get the whole story straight off.

And I don't mind music writers not knowing about the tech, but it does bother me a lot when they start writing about it despite not knowing about it - using bits that they've picked up from musicians, bits that they've sort of heard somewhere, bits that they've extrapolated. It's almost as cringey as the garbled versions of youth culture you get when a BBC or Telegraph or whatever journo has been briefed on jungle music / culture for ten minutes and then tries to talk about it.

Zomby's about 30 (not sure why that would be of interest...)

Thought as much - he was talking about skating in Jordans listening to jungle tapes in one interview so I figured he was a bit older than most of the current crop.
Coupled with the no photo's thing i think it's a fair bet he's put out stuff previously under a different name / in a different scene
