Mercury sucks (2008 redux)

fuck you Sloane:p:D

Lol, I knew I shouldn't have written it.

Jesus god almighty wasn't it turgid this year. Although I quite liked Lisa Hannigan's song and I hate stuff that sounds like that normally. That Big Dada lady's performance was laughable, like the Jazz Cafe virus mutated and grew strong. Scary.

blimey sloane crackerjack and stn are funny tonite.

i don't get speech debelle, its hard to listen to her cos she sounds younger and more boyish than chipmunk.
also she announced on the award that her ambition is to work with kings of leon, which is hard to take and the nme have used for a headline already.

Bacdafucup:mad:

I was getting annoyed when the TV heads were going on about acid jazz and Jazzmatazz. That stuff, for better or worse, had a swing about it and was celebrating the music. On Speech Therapy the music is incidental. You don't get it unless you sit and listen to it and soak up the words. She's like some madhead in the corner who wears you down until you wind up loving her. And I like her line about wanting to make a hip hop Tracy Chapman album - that's heroically uncool and hip hop needs more like her, people who genuinely don't give a fuck about what's going on.

Can I retrospectively change the thread title? Mercury's killing it (2009).

Don't get me wrong, I like her - her interview in the Metro today (yesterday) was genius - all Michael Jackson is Jesus and I'm gonna throw an almighty wobbly if I don't win the prize, funny stuff - and I'd agree with you about the madhead thing, it's no surprise Roots Manuva produced it and it's good to see him getting some real dues - but the Mercury performance was really, really bad, everything that's bad about Jools Holland TV. She wasn't alone there, though. Mercury is killing it, but I'd take that in the negative sense ;)

Thought it was Will Ashon and some other guy.

edit: Wayne Lotek, that's the other guy - though he has done stuff for Manuva before

Ah my mistake, I read it as Wayne Lotek being Roots Manuva's real name.

I'll shut up now. It's better she won than Kasabian.

Infinitely true.

Remember the 1st time I heard Kasabian, and I thought... "... This is a joke... right?"

A lot of people - including some whose opinions I generally trust - were saying how good their latest album is. I think their palettes have been so dulled by Oasis that when you get a lager rock group who got past page 1 of the DIY Beatles manual, they think it's an act of near genius. I haven't heard them since the first album, but that was shite enough for a lifetime.

shes a nice person and everything, good interviews and all that, but its more like a hip hop katie melua album.

ha, I haven't listened to the album in full.. But all the tracks I've heard from her album have been pretty dire. would it be too cynical to suggest that the judges were just trying to go for the shock factor and try and gain a bit of credibility. To call it best British album of the last year is total bollocks. It seem each year the nominees feel exactly the same - they have to have at least one or two beneath the radar singer/songwriter act and jazz band who never wins, at least one or two 'profound' urban acts and then just whatever is popular and can be considered 'alternative'.

Not for nothing, but, aside from Burial, did any dubstep or even garage get consideration? Memory sucks and too lazy to bother with wikipedia...

I mean, I think MJ Cole probably, but...

Lol I did that as well. I'd put in Soldier over Pepper though. I don't like Merked Again.

Giggs should have won it by a country mile.
