Can turn naughty
Does anyone here run their production kit on a notebook PC?

used to but mine (pentium m) started to overheat and make too much fan noise after about a year of use. was cool for a while but i dunno, i think the close proximity of all the compnents was no good for prolonged high cpu usage. switched back to desktop and haven't looked back. only time i ever wish i still had one is when i go away somewhere.

Ooh, lots of people. Am thinking of getting a new set-up and having something nice and small is appealing.

Oh yeah, what processor/RAM etc do your notebooks have?

Bring out the vacuum
Intel Centrino Duo 2GHz, 2GB of RAM. I guess it's not much by today's standards?

It's not like you need super duper specs, if you're strictly thinking about production (as opposed to playing out).

Of course it's ideal to not have something sluggish - tunes taking ages to open up, etc. - but I honestly reckon machine specs are more of a concern to gaming freaks than to people writing tunes.

I guess I'm completely ignoring I/O stuff, I'm just thinking of the guts of the computer - processor speed, amount of RAM, etc.

(Haha, not trying to sound defensive, I honestly believe it!)

Let me know what you think of this r'n'b/pop type tune. Still learning how to do vocals

party record with a siren
oh! Anyone know how to get soundcloud to do this ??

Click [Edit] for the track,
Scroll down and check that you've set it to "Public" under the Privacy Settings
Scroll to the bottom
Make sure that the bottom box is ticked ("Allow 128k MP3...")
Click "save"
Profit!

EDIT: Ignore that - seems to be an issue either with the Soundcloud widget or Dissensus.

oh i thought you meant do you run your hardware with a notebook. i use midi to trigger my drum machines, synths and sampler and run it into a mixer. not a gigging set up really.

but i know lots of people with software only set ups and their music sounds much fuller and more interesting than mine, so i guess its more about what you do with your tools.

yeah never listen to hardware/software obsessed guys that aren't making good tunes, if you know your tools (even if it's just fruity or soundforge) well there are fewer and fewer limits to what you can come up with

Yeah, the wee djs (electro producer) only uses soundforge for sequencing too. They have a kind of multichannel thing in the new one too afaik.

yeah, i guess it is possible to only make tracks with soundforge.

i'd find it too restrictive though. you can generate some basic wave forms in it but you would be limiting yourself to mainly using only samples really and then cutting the tracks together without a grid, which is fine really, but maybe not the best to start off with. and then not using synthesis or learning synthesis. a limited way to interact with with amplitude/filter envelopes etc...

you'd be putting yourself under a lot of undue work. theres so many free and comercial pieces of software that are purpose built its not logical to give them a shot first.

or trackers. i like trakcers.

yeah, like just getting the levels of all the sounds right and mixing them must be a nightmare...
I think it's a different way of working compared to trad sequencers. There's a number of ways you could approach it, I think that copy and past etc is your friend, in many ways you have alot more space to mess about with the samples and such using effects.
