Ka sounds like a more monotonous and less refined Roc Marciano. Would've been ANYONE in '97. Enough.

Marciano is great because he's kind of awful, and brilliant. The beats are always PERFECTLY nostalgic. Like, you listen and minus the sound quality of the mixing, you think you're listening to a cassette. Also, he's like Mic Geronimo after a stroke or something.

He also can barely move his face and his arms. Very robotic. I think that's where I get the stroke vibe from.

I think you're missing the point, and I don't wanna argue it, what Marciano would you recommend? I love that erm type of sound but from an quick youtube flick haven't been impressed, but will search if you offer some tips man cos I respect your opinion.

i think you're missing the point cos it doesn't have to be futuristic - who was it who said that rap was the first time that backward thinking was allowed within a certain type of culture? Some hip hop theorist. I thought the roboticism was great, I thought it summed it up well. But, y'know, i never liked awful but brilliant rappers.

that track 'the hybrid' is good though. not the album the track. that's it. i like watching his face when he raps though.

I know nothing about the goons who turn to rap but

the ones that are super over the top ie Rick Ross/Gunplay/Waka could potentially be the ones who hype and dont back it

Where are someone like Danny Brown/KA/Freddie Gibbs kinda make you nervous like they will do what needs to be done.

I appreciate both cos I dont have to really know them in the real world so Ill take it all in.

Oh, side thought, Earl Sweatshirt and Tyler. Tyler gives it all the mouth but who is the one locked up.

Probably some bullshit rule of thumb

I think you're right about Marciano (I was pussy footing around the issue of his anti-charisma in a blog post yesterday). Danny's almost the opposite - an EXCESS of personality, at least vocally.

i dont like danny brown either. good interviewee and that noz interview is a big reason im sure that people got into him in the first place but hes like guilty simpson and a lot of guys, they have this OTT aggressiveness that doesnt really ring true. D12 at least understood you had to have a bit of humour.

who was it who said that rap was the first time that backward thinking was allowed within a certain type of culture?

i dont know who said it but rap was a brand new genre so it was doing something new with old sources/sounds. older genres using old/backward sounds/sources are just being lazy.

If you think Danny Brown a) resembles Guilty Simpson and b) doesn't have a sense of humour, I'm forced to conclude that you haven't listened to a lot of his music.

edit: although I see your Guilty Simpson comparison is really just along the ''OTT aggressiveness'' lines.

lol earl's mum send him to what was basically a hardcore summer camp.
danny openly admits to his gangster content as being way out of date, like he hasn't sold crack in almost 10 years or something. i dont really care, i dont really how legit most rappers are in reality, so long as they are convincing enough to maintain the suspension of disbelief for the duration of the record. its mostly acting to me, and thats not meant as a belittlement. obv there's people like boosie who just seem flat out real but thats more an added dimension of interest than the main issue.

that was one of my problems with gunplay is I just didnt believe his persona, it just seemed way too hammy. as you would a bad actor. but I've started to find his shtick a more convincing and a lot more enjoyable.
These are horrendous ways to qualify music I know, but that's rap for you. I love it anyway.

yeah, danny brown has a sense of humour (so some good punchlines) but his voice is just too jarring for me to care. id rather listen to non phixion or necro for me so crazy OTT rap. theres something a bit leaden about danny brown.

Again, I don't really see the comparison between Danny Brown and Necro/Non Phixion other than eccentricity? I don't think most of Danny Brown's stuff is about murdering people/dealing drugs etc.

''Leaden'' isn't how I'd describe his music (or his rapping, at least), either, but that's a personal thing. A lot of people probably find his voice irritating... I do myself from time to time and I'm quite a big fan of him.

Then again he doesn't even use 'that voice' on all of his tracks, in fact he has a much larger range of vocal delivery than most rappers.

Anyway, I'm not trying to convert you to Danny Brown, I really think its the signature voice/style that many people can't get around and fair play to them. I mean, you obviously must like Necro and I find his voice massively irritating. His beats are quite good, can't stand his rapping one bit.

ok recommend me some great DB tracks to check. i want to give him another chance. 358903223 hipsters cant be wrong after all.

the necro comparison isnt really perfect but DB seems to like shocking you and so does necro. i think necros a far more agile rapper (and i barely listen to him these days, oddly) than danny. actually it just dawned on me that its xzibit who danny makes me think of more than anyone.

>danny brown
>xzibit.

the fuck. he's like the anti-xzibit.
ok how about a hold on the random db comparisons, until you've listened to his music more at least. xxx and / or hawaiian snow, they're worth listening in their entirety. hybrid etc if u like more trad detroit stuff.

honestly i think he's pretty much incomparable.

I don't expect these to make you like him but I think it shows that he's far from being a one dimensional shock / hipster / OTT rapper (though he does all those things well).

I got bored reading, but Danny Brown is better than nearly every rapper mentioned in this last page.

Marcy has no REAL personality, true. But he's a perfect sort of "Woke up 2 decades later, still clutching the pistol he used to rob a Bodega in '97 after the cryogenic freeze got him." Yes he's not good, but I enjoy him... as comedy. Ka is just fucking garbage.

I'm seeing Necro and Danny Brown comparisons... Some of you guys are on dust. Or need to stop listening to fucking AZ albums or something. Jesus. I don't even DISLIKE Necro, but just... stop it. No.

ok so the xzibit thing turns out not be true. ive no idea why i brought up necro either. im ill though and slightly out of it lol. anyway, he still doesnt really sound very distinct to me (i could prob hear him in a group with phat kat or phat ray or someone), but hes def solid, you can tell hes trying, and i like him more than guilty simpson, and hey, shooting moves is cool. i think he might be a rapper who i dont 'like' but who just makes good songs. for some reason he makes me want to listen to old consequence. no idea why.

have you all discussed rich forever already? i think its too fucking long but also fucking good.
