The Dissensus Album Canon

labyrinthine in the sense that it's hard to get your bearings in a given track. there's always a lot happening at once, but almost no large scale changes, so you're constantly hearing something and thinking, "wait, has that always been like that?" the way the music resists being mentally mapped out makes it more mysterious and immersive. (and "trippy" if i can use that word. :D)

voodoo ray has that too, but it's not quite as "advanced" as newbuild in that respect.

of course the appeal of this approach is another matter...

and yeah, "harder" in the sense that it's not so much pretty as "mental" and high intensity, as barty pointed out. more of a harsh, eerie sci fi atmosphere as well.

Dunno about all that really, for me the thing with voodoo ray is that birds voice

He liked Can You Feel It,

The people who pioneered deep house hit on the same thing mobb deep did; the uncovered an archetypal aesthetic space. These undeniable, unresistable sound worlds that work divorced from any time period or technological advances or lineages. You could play can you feel it and shook ones to Hitler, Henry the 8th, queen cleopatra and to the bloke who invented fire and they’d all have the same reaction. They’d all arrive at the same emotional place. They aren’t songs, but rather gods in a pantheon

the soundtrack of heaven

barty and luka both love pulling the rug out from under you like that. "oh, that song i did an awesome write up of earlier? i actually think it's boring, i was just pretending to like it as an intellectual game!"

I think I was doing that with stone roses yesterday. I think I probably prefer screamadelica but the truth is that both those albums, I listened to em when I was already too old. My favourite album from when I was a teenager is prince, diamonds and pearls.

But prince is not allowed on Dissensus is he? Only mj acceptable

Oh right. Yeah but does anyone else like that album? I asked on here yesterday, no one seems to give a fuck about prince. And if they did, they'd all go for purple rain or sign o the times or some shit

Yeah diamonds and pearls side 2 is shit. But side 1 is 100x better than anything 808 fucking state ever did

Version did a thread called 'Prince is a cunt'

version loves pulling the rug out from under you like that. "oh, that song i did an awesome write up of earlier? i actually think it's boring, i was just pretending to like it as an intellectual game!"

:crylarf:

i don't do it on purpose, i think it's more a thing of 1) my rhetorical style being very superlative so everything's either the greatest thing that ever happened or the worst shit on gods earth and 2) i'm consistant in the things i love and completely, erratically inconsistent about anything that falls below that threshold.

yeah that's what i'm saying with voodoo ray being more like a pop version of acid house.

maybe i shouldn't have brought up voodoo ray at all in that last post, cause i'm not saying one's better than the other. just trying to point out how they're different. both peaks of the era but in different ways.
