“Hang on a minute, haven’t we already heard this one?” I hear you say. Well, no - this is the ‘Dark Crystals Mix’ made available exclusively on the US pressing, and boy does it live up to that name. This track has it all - laser gunshots, rave stabs, dream inducing pads, the ubiquitous “badbwoy” vocal sample, random sound effects including a car horn being blasted in an urban underpass in the dead of night, and an amen filled breakdown that could have been lifted straight out of a Grooverider circa ’92 set. All of this is overridden with the ‘It’s Over Now’ vocal in it’s entirety, which propels the track into that category of dance music that can only evoke feelings of distraught, melancholic heartbreak following the collapse of an ecstasy-tinged relationship. I must have first come across this one on youtube soon after discovering the UK pressing and it’s possible that it was this record which first made me aware of the existence of discogs as I can remember the feeling of disappointment upon realising that there were no copies of this available to buy outside of the US. I spent years searching for this record (including spending an entire afternoon digging in the A-1 Record Shop in East Village when I visited New York in 2010, alas to no avail) and eventually tracked down a copy for sale from an ex-Niche Nightclub resident in 2013. An absolute masterpiece - 10/10.
