Bedroom Techno

Where it distinguishes itself from new age proper is a)the Sci Fi stuff techno comes with, and the alienation (from nature) technology imposes and b) that luxuriant self indulgent wallowing in feelings of loneliness (eg space motif, the ubiquitous 'night drive') and delicious melancholy.

These feelings are harder to access in today's state of permanant anxiety ----- terror ---- breakdown

The rubbishness of it adds a sense of naïveté, a childlike aspect which evokes an innocence we feel we have lost

I want everyone to make up some imaginary track titles. That's todays class project

One of the fantasies of this 90s utopianism is technology as escape from people, a kind of retreat to forests or space, lonesome journeys. But as we hit the millenium we realise that our technology is overwhelming us with people and voices and information, constant nagging connectedness and anxiety with it, no escape

That is correct. These records propose a relaxation of vigilance which is impossible in a world without privacy the panopticon where every moment is observed.

Relaxation, drifting off, the sea of tranquility. These things are all cancelled until the Death Star is destroyed.

Or until we have completed the Borg process and the end of the individual and the distinction between inner and outer is collapsed.

loving that mix but not 100% convinced the music was made by actual soviets - some of it sounds like the Drive soundtrack which i also love

i went off it when the vocals began and then after that it becomes straight up trip hop, but the first half hour or so is excellent

Yeah the stuff that sounds like Slowdive has to post date the USSR. Anyhow.

It doesn’t take much to push it into club territory. The bedroom part of it comes in for me that mostly Detroit influenced stuff has the musical intricacies to be just as listenable at home. But then again the same applies to a lot of ‘dub’ techno which more comes from the mellow vibe of it.

Soviet Synths. ANS for early stuff (Artemiev and so on). Polivoks for later (a tank of a synth).

ah, so you meant it as music you listen to in yr bedroom? I think it's more commonly used referring to music that's made in bedrooms.

Yeah that's how I take it to mean. Or I suppose another commonly used term back in the day would have been 'after hours' stuff.

That's a good way of putting it. Makes it sound a bit pedestrian though, which maybe some of it is.
