Peter Pomerantsev's first book is in part about his time working for Russian state TV. It's probably a little out of date now though I'd guess - doesn't take into account the events of the last few years, the way it's got worse if Rich is to be believed.

Me too. It's just so aesthetically and morally repugnant that it means you've gone off the deep end if you use it without any distancing or irony. You're past the point of no return.

Well the idea - as with anything - is that you plough through it to find the good stuff (I mean, not that I ever would, don't get me wrong), and then when you're at a party and about to have a peak experience and they ask you for a tune you can reach effortlessly into your inventory and blow the lid off the party. People just see the easy cool which is the tip of the iceberg, they don't know about the work beneath the waterline.

In fairness to the Russians, there is one channel they have there which is German and which seems to be fairly solid factual news from what I've seen of it (which is admittedly fairly little). It would be an exaggeration to say that they are welcoming an actual alternative propaganda channel into their country, but I think there is at least a chance that it might contradict (ie correct) an RT story so that is something.
