I can totally believe this, although I'm surprised it hasn't continued accelerating. You watch something like Hostel and it's much more horrible than most of the old Video Nasties.

There aren't that many people killed in Hostel though. It's just that the deaths you do see are much more graphic.

OK, but you know what I mean, right, more bodies, more graphic, whatever. I'm an expert in grim Italian horror movies but Hostel II made me feel like disinfecting myself.
