If you think Burial's music is boring, all that conceptual stuff around it will just make you roll your eyes. It's a ploy.

If you think Burial's music is beautiful, the conceptual stuff will only deepen that sense. It's a key.
i agree to some degree but I don't think that you can seperate it like that and give primacy to some immediate independent intuitive faculty eg. "what you think." i think whatever that immediate opinion means, it's also informed by the conceptual stuff attached to it. I think you experience those things simultaneously whole thing as a package (of course depending on what conceptual communication your existing knowledge intuits)

But what if I said you only like grime cos you're an East London patriot who wants to believe the best music in the world comes from there?

It worked on a visceral level as music with catchy melodies, thrilling textures and rhythms, etc.
when bipp came out i had no idea who sophie was, it sounded mental and gross and thrilling

luka actually loves that OOH tune. how couldnt you? he just cant admit it because of all these silly associations in his head

which is really annoying because i really want to read him describe this music. he can do much better than pink dildo autechre

shiels i know you can sense theres a kind of platitudinous quality to a lot of the things people are saying about this. youre a language professional, one of the top copywriters in the country, you can sense when something is superficial and rote, making the due observances, saying what youre supposed to say. i know you want to peel back a few more layers. get beyond the usual stuff the algorithm generates.

yes. thats always the case and that gets nauseating - bowie. but it's not the point here is it? i was defending the music against third last week

I dunno, I enjoy reading the ideas behind music I can't stand... sometimes I read about sports I hate, maybe I'm weird.

Yeah that was too simplistic i suppose...

You can hate the music and find the conceptual stuff fascinating. You can love the music and find the conceptual stuff laughable.

HAVE I COVERED ALL BASES NOW

They are interesting artists to compare though Burial and Sophie, both very conceptual with aesthetics being an integral part of the music but wildly different approaches in sound and media presence. I remember reading an interview with burial saying how he doesn't consider himself a musician which I always thought strange, I'd say if you make music you are a musician. Sophie and that crowd are desperate to be seen as musicians on the other hand. Perhaps just two different reactions to going to art schools.
