I don't think it matters if woops doesn't like it and there's no point trying to browbeat him into it but at the same time I think it's good to hear why it means a lot to people, how they experience it, the nuances they have picked up on through living with the record for so many years etc.

oh sure i get you although i think saying Tempreture's Rising is fresh prince quality is some out of this world take cause will would NEVER rap over a beat like that and i think Fresh Prince era Will as squeaky clean as his raps were was a solid storyteller

Slightly off topic, but I've always loved this sort of imagery, bleak as it is. You get it in Nas and Pun too, talking about making people backflip and lifting them off the ground like a magician.

coming after the earlier tracks in the album, that was the first thing the beat and the female chorus made me think of

It's odd being put into a position of analysis of music - as I was when I was (yawn) a music critic. And it's a position you can put yourself in, ofc. ("What's all the fuss about?")

One thing I love about music is that it often overwhelms my "critical faculties" or my hostility or my overfamiliarity. As irresistible as a drug.

I get this with paintings but (my senses dulled) I more or less have to be stoned so the "direct" visual impression can overwhelm my tedious amateur art history categorisation, etc.

Listening to the infamous on cd as a teenager - I can't remember the exact experience but I can remember it being an emotionally enveloping one (Mobb Deep is a mood, indeed), like watching a claustrophobic crime movie (although that's sort of a cliché about the album which I've realised isn't quite as monochrome as that).

ok Return makes sense but knowing how white donnys used to carry on with ODB does leave me queasy, Whut? the album is amazing i'll cling onto that and Red's other two for the rest of my days

but ANARCHY and MATTHEW? those are the two big surprises here also all of these are NY rap albums

yeah i deliberately didn't post the artist names to demonstrate my head credentials.

all NY albums cos i prefer the NY beats and atmosphere to the slicker g-funk sound even though i like warren G a lot. so in theory Infamous is exactly what I like, and I'll admit it works well as a mood piece, maybe after 4 or 5 more listens i'd get into it.

do white donnys like the whole album or just shimmy shimmy ya? cos that's the obvious single and a lot different to most of the other stuff on that album, it's well weird
