Deep Electro

What's that?
But yeah Wang was special. The venue, the vibe, the music, the crowd, even the staff were fun. From when I first discovered it I went every single month for years. That and Kosmische as I've probably said tediously often.

I lived in London 2007 to 2010 and never quite found a really good club. I went to this one in Harlesden where we lived for the first year called Lodge which was good crowd but wrong music (like fairly syrupy R&B and a big of garage). And I went to plastic people a few times. Before I moved down my girlfriend used to live in Brixton and we'd see the crowds for dmz/mass but we never actually went. Then when we moved to Hackney I used to go to visions a lot and liked it. But really nothing ever touched squat parties for me. Never heard of Wang, world unknown or anything.

Anthony Rother's Sex With The Machines LP is a bit of a classic

I used to like this one... more like electropop really to my ears but it does have electro elements I guess. Anyway, I shamelessly love electropop so who cares? I had this twelve but it was in a bag I left in the back of a taxi so I haven't heard it for years.

Went to Lion & Lamb a few weeks back for craig richards and radioactiveman, a lot of amazing electro played. Drexciya and affiliated are the obvious starting point for deeper serious stuff. For UK stuff 'deeper' through the 90s means IDM, so obv aphex, autechre, the artificial inteligence warp compilation is a good start. There's also loads of amazing stuff on the less serious side getting into 00s electroclash but not full trashy tripe. Ivan smagghe's suck my deck mix, radioactiveman fabric mix. The best deep electro song is drexciya digital tsunami , followed by bike by autechre, followed by the first one on analogue bubblebath 3

I guess there was a link to electroclash. That Rother one (computer people) could be either. Emerge is the most electroclash tune ever but they used to play the Dave Clarke mix everywhere, also Vitalic... this is not deep electro though.

That’s what we mean by deep electro, music taking pleasure in the anxiety of technological advance ?
I'm just saying that I realise that those pop-tastic electroclash tunes towards which I inevitably head and have posted here due to misguided enthusiasm, are, looking back, not at all what was required, perhaps I should create a thread - complementary not rival - to celebrate its shallower and trashier distant cousin.

Oh I’m not criticising just speculating on what we might mean by deep electro. I was well into some of that stuff at the time, gigolo records, vitality, Anthony rother. Listening back now some of it can feel a bit rhythmically stiff because of a kind of rock influence

Sure mate, I just wanted to make it clear that it was my own tips I was criticising, not yours or anyone else's. And I was criticising them for lack of relevance rather than any of the other failings that they no doubt have.

As for deep electro, I reckon we're gonna struggle to define it, but lower down in the hierarchy of attempted taxonomy, I think it feels like one of those things where one might say "I can't define it, but when I hear it I know it"- except I can't even definitively go that far, I'm stuck at "I can't define it, but at least on some occasions I can hear something and know that that is NOT it - and Emerge (which I love) is an example".
