tho, to get on a slightly heretical tip, i find youngsta a little bit boring, i mean hes obviously incredibly technically skilled but i think he still just plays dubs from dmz, skream, d1, and now headhunter and thats it!!

He plays (a lot of) benga and some hijak tunes now as well. His sets have been absolutely incredible since he started to play more uptempo stuff. They always start deep but just build and build and build. He's easily the most gifted DJ in dubstep... check some recent rinse sets, you might be surprised :)

The 15th looks to be amazing. It'll be my first one in a couple of months..

i havent listened to him on rinse nor seen him live for a while, but im sad to say that i didnt really rate the recent fwd podcast with loefah that much at all... a lot of benga tunes i wasnt really feeling that much, and too many standard coki wobblers for my tastes... maybe it caught him on a bad day, i need to get a recent rinse set i reckon

fair enough! ive kinda stopped paying quite as much attention to rinse dubstep sessions as i used to. have just bought about 10 grime mixtapes so when i get thru them i'm onto youngsta! whats hatchas selection like nowadays? he plays a lot of benga too i think

Bare in mind most, if not all of those coki wobblers will have been played by loefah. Whenever I've seen Loefah DJ by himself it's been all his and cokis stuff, with the occasional mala thing. The only coki wobbler youngsta plays regularly is tortured (which he doubled up the other day - sounded SICK :)), and I think I've heard him play shattered too.

Definitely worth checking a rinse show.. he's at his best when he gets a real flow going - don't really think his style is suited to back to back sets at all.

Love them or hate them (I'm agnostic on this matter) but Youngsta and Hatcha are responsible for crystallising the current dubstep sound, for setting up a lot of the terms of the genre, in a way. I've yet to be convinced though (asides from playing some more Benga choons) that they are the future of the sound... However, it sounds like I need to check out some of the more recent "edging into uptempo" stuff... which sounds a lot more tempting than 2 hrs of grinding doom-wobble-step. Any particular recommendations?

Couldn't agree more... The way he builds up his sets is incredible.. The second half of his DMZ set just absolutely KICKED OFF!!

He could cheer up a bit tho!

Its less individual tracks and more of how they are combined. Yunx seems to be playing less D1 and more Benga now...and from Benga's current phase where he seems to have gone deep all of a sudden, as opposed to the rather plasticy stuff Hatcha was playing 5 or 6 months ago.

i do find it really disappointing how few djs play d1 though...i cant understand it to be honest

I've heard D1 play out a couple of times recently and they've both been great... but I totally understand why Youngsta isn't playing more of his new bits. He's playing the three really deep bits that D1's made recently, but pretty much all of the rest of his stuff sounds to be sexy, 2 steppy, rhodesy slush. They're really good but totally not the stuff of Youngsta sets at all.

that mix sounded very dated. i'm suprised at that going up there with the same old tunes.

yeh i see what you're saying, but its people like n-type and kode9 that i would expect to hear play more D1 though, they never really have, its only ever been youngsta and occassionally skream. i guess maybe they just arent tight or whatever.

i really rate the ukg sound he's bringing, but i hope he continues to pursue the trippy styles of warning remix and cocaine and the like alongside, theres nothing i know that sounds like them, the massive booming engulfing sub with the nightmarish arpeggios and stabs and skittering beats, so so sick. loving greazy too, he does a top dubstep/grime hybrid (likewise with Mucky). cant wait for the next Tempa EP

for me, it was really spoiled by all the samey coki tracks. i hate hating (lol), and i mean no disrespect to him, but i just dont understand whats happened to coki. he used to be one of the most innovative and exciting producers around; Mood Dub; Stuck; Intergalactic; the tracks on Grime II; other unreleased ones like Chalice and Madhead; and Haunted was absolutely incredible when it dropped... but it seems like creatively he's more or less just stopped still since that track (other than the Richie Spice Refix), and i dont understand it. i want to love his tunes, cos i always did, but i just cant muster any enthusiasm for the slew of lfo-ing shufflers that have followed. it genuinely saddens me to hear one of the previous front-runners become one of the key offenders in the development of a static archetype sound

To each their own, I'm still loving those Coki wobble tunes, maybe cuz I haven't already rinsed them to death listening to radio sets. Just got the Ammo Dubs promo CD and his tune Shattered on there is just absolutely fucked. I really don't mind people making a series of self similar tracks if they are extremely good like these. That and the new Wonder tune on there at the beginning absolutely made my night last night coming home on the train. I wanted to like the D1 tunes because I'm into his style but felt they didn't quite get anywhere. The rigid halfstep stiffness of headhunters tunes continues to not be exciting.

yeh it is a matter of different strokes different folks, im just tired of them. there are so many. shattered is good, but its still never really 'got me' cos its always just sounded like a slightly weaker haunted to me. but i should give them another chance i guess. i just love how deep and twisted and imaginative his tunes used to be, but now his tracks sound conservative to my ears.

i really like Descent by Headhunter, but his style is a little stiff, as you say. wasnt overwhelmed by the last D1 ep, Cocaine is sick but the others are decent but not as good as he has in him imo, i hope for better on the next

In the right context they can be devastating... but I really wish he'd switch up the drum patterns a bit. Every single tune I've heard from him has exactly the same percussion.

Which D1 tunes are on the ammo dubs CD by the by? I'm envious.

Though the new coki with the mental percussion a la Hanted is wicked...its on the N-Type/Hijak Stella sessions cover set.

There's gonna be a D1 double pack in the new year on Tempa. Eight tunes.

My favourite is "bring it back", well i think that's what it's called. its so rave, so rhodes-saccarine sweet with kanye-style pitched up house vocals i should hate it, but like skream, i'm caught under its spell. a nice antidote to all the token darkness about.
