Good news
Hopefully ET will be on it, I love that tune..
There's gonna be a D1 double pack in the new year on Tempa. Eight tunes.
My favourite is "bring it back", well i think that's what it's called. its so rave, so rhodes-saccarine sweet with kanye-style pitched up house vocals i should hate it, but like skream, i'm caught under its spell. a nice antidote to all the token darkness about.
for me, it was really spoiled by all the samey coki tracks. i hate hating (lol), and i mean no disrespect to him, but i just dont understand whats happened to coki. he used to be one of the most innovative and exciting producers around; Mood Dub; Stuck; Intergalactic; the tracks on Grime II; other unreleased ones like Chalice and Madhead; and Haunted was absolutely incredible when it dropped... but it seems like creatively he's more or less just stopped still since that track (other than the Richie Spice Refix), and i dont understand it. i want to love his tunes, cos i always did, but i just cant muster any enthusiasm for the slew of lfo-ing shufflers that have followed. it genuinely saddens me to hear one of the previous front-runners become one of the key offenders in the development of a static archetype sound
however, i do like the fact that the scene is still quite obviously mutating, even if i don't always like its directions. its still the most interesting thing that is happening in dance music right now and for me, thats always the thing to follow. i just hope they don't settle on a template which the neophytes probably think is dubstep. (not knocking them here, everyone has to start somewhere and no-one spills out the womb being cool)
I like a good wobble but I prefer a rolling sine like what toasty does. Skinny is the mean trak.
Surely wobble and halfstep is now what the amen and reese was to jungle. I'm surprised as yet that no one has 'sub-genrefied' dubstep into the equivalent of drum'n'bass/techstep/neurofunk/liquid/jump up...etc etc
re. the coki thing - "clumpy" i think kode9 calls it (although he may be referring to the more noisy / almost verging into idm end of dubstep).
its just utterly and unintentionally devoid of funk and if that wobbler bassline never moved you in the first place, its just a bore as it relies on it to propel the track forward.
Whilst I'm not a massive fan of the coki wobblers either, can you not hear the funk in his incredible drums? Mood Dub and Haunted, just to name a couple, have an absolutely incredible groove. Not sure what the talk about sub was about either.. coki tracks hit hard. Just because they wobble the house down doesn't mean they don't have any sub pressure.
coki WOBWOBWOB tracks
i think we should settle on wobble-step as a sub genre. it sounds like the kind of thing you might find yourself engaged in after drinking ten pints of strong lager.
that's fantastic martin. i'll give it a read this evening. i have the utmost respect for sam and his music. he deserves a bright future in music, whatever sort he decides to make.Full Shackleton interview on my blog.
