ariana is a better singer, but often doesnt sound emotionally connected to what shes singing. though maybe thats intentional and to fit the zeitgeist, idk.

I know what you mean, technically perfect but the high end stuff can feel showy and cold at times. no tears left to cry is one I really liked

the song with the weeknd is good cos shes using a diff part of her range (at least to what ive heard of hers) and she sounds 'committed' to it. you totally buy it.

Isn't 'showy and cold' the Weeknd summarised in three words thought?

"Out of Time" has a video I see. I think when I'm fully out of the dark wood I'll be able to enjoy this again.

Heard this old tune of his on NTS this year and really like it

yes maybe in a different sense - the weeknd is showy as in flashy and boastful. and cold as in nihilistic, detahced, sinister, selfish. I meant that ariana can be virtuosic, technically brilliant and then sometimes lacking the error and idiosyncracies that might give a voice, for want of a better word, soul. im not comparing them

Still his best song

listened to one weekend album about twice and didn't invest coz it sounded cheesy to me. i always loved early drake once k punk got me to see it through his lens and that material things+ self-disgust (but i'm going to keep doing it anyway) thing is a really rich pop culture seam i think. i don't know what producers are doing with vocals these days but whatever it is it suits his voice i think. somehow that high register sounds full-spectrum and forceful. that kind of vocal would have sounded weak in the 00s i think and it really doesn't now. everything is kind of smudged together.

really got into this tune in about 2019

Thinking about the weekend/Drake makes me wonder about Canada. We need to talk about Canada.

I agree with Luka about whap, that was the standout anthem. Also really liked 'Coke Diet' by Pusha T but I know he's not popular on here.

Some of my friends are obsessed with Rosalia's album but she hasn't clicked for me thus far.

Maybe I just don't like his voice actually lol

Or rather I do like it but I also don't like it if you smell me

He's the R&B Thom Yorke, stick that in your pipe and smoke it
