my brother was here recently, he wasn't tipping for anything, the logic being 'why the hell should i pay more for this, its already really expensive, all these people (servers barmen etc) clearly have a lot more money than me', which is pretty much definitely true actually.
Good for him.

Dunno about that, but I certainly balk at picking up an employer's slack by topping up their shoddy wages for them.

It's a complete racket, and it's depressing to see otherwise intelligent and progressive Americans defending it.

We've still got taxpayers topping up shit wages via in-work benefits.
Call me a mad old lefty, but I think that if a job is worth paying someone to do at all, then someone doing it full time should be able to support themselves on it without having to be subsidized by customers, the taxpayer, food banks donors, or anyone else.

And if the employer can't justify paying that much, then the job shouldn't exist.

$6.12 ($5.12 for the coffee, $1 for the tip) at cafe vita in the LES.

Plus if he's only visiting he won't go back to the cafe and give them a chance to masturbate into his coffee.

Seems like you're re-enacting the first scene from Reservoir Dogs in which they argue over tipping in the cafe where Joe Hislop has assembled Mr Pink, Mr Tea and Nice Guy Version.

I should point out that I have tipped people in bars and restaurants when I've visited the states, because it's cunty not to. But it's still an obnoxious system.

Do I really only get two likes for that brilliant parallel I drew between Reservoir Dogs and dissensus? Surely Nice Guy Version was worth something?

I don't think nice guy version stacks up. Cos wasn't he arguing with Mr tea/Mr pink.

Interesting how there's not really a Mr White arguing the case for tipping.
