Unpopular opinions

A thread for defending unpopular opinions. No one's going to agree but I'll make a case for defending.

First is that I like Calibre, at least his good tracks. I've seen him get derided, lumped in with a lot of bad liquid DnB, but his drums were always slinkier than most other 2 step DnB, and the rest of his sounds crunchier.

I have tracks I like better, but listening to Mr Maverick for the first time in years, it occurred to me that it's a great Gregory Isaacs sample. Never understood other than the basic drum patterns why he got slated.

Then the second is that I don't like new Rap music, just don't know anything about it. Seems to me all the beats are the same, silly hit hats and hand claps, and overly aggressive rapping.

Do you have any unpopular opinions?

there are some Calibre tracks I like tbh. I just don't get the fawning adoration as if he's the best thing since sliced bread. Are you actually going to tell me he's on a par with second wave reinforced?

This is a tune though.

I think he might be called overrated, but still better than most liquid. Second wave reinforced I think is hit and miss.

This would be in a liquid mix if I did it, which would be purely for nostalgic purposes as I was into that stuff at the time.

I stopped listening by the time stuff like this came out and only just heard it for the first time.

I always remember my older brother saying "Naughty Naughty very Naughty" to me when I was younger.

Does this mean unpopular opinions on Dissensus? Or unpopular opinions in general?

I've never seen anyone slag off Calibre on here, or say anything about him

I guess defending liquid drum n bass in general is probably unpopular for dissensus though, that's true

It can be defended in the same way as techstep, as a compartmentalisation worth exploring, but i don't think you can defend it on a par with jungle or anything. Not because it's boring (a lot of it can be) but because it's intentionally designed to be limited. Liquid (pre-hospital/mos obvs) was very much a sub sub genre of the roller (itself a substyle of jungle/dnb.)

this is the solid state tune though. shimmering, closest thing to actually representing the term 'liquid funk' imo.

have to be careful with this sort of thing though. Once it gets too maximal or gets stuck in the same mood it can often give off brits wanting to be jazz musicians kind of vibe. But as a palate cleanser it can be bliss, when deployed appropriately.

reminds me of a guy that used to post on Discogs - he was also basically trying to say that rave started at the Starck Club in Dallas because it was one of the places where mdma was as plentiful as the air itself

starck club people love to say shit like that lol. had a friend who managed a nearly identical venue in florida, who not only swears that he had never heard of the starck club, but that there were several other late night alternative gay clubs around the US at the time where mdma was similarly available.

you can watch a full length documentary on the starck club for free on plex:

these guys are way way way invested in pushing the notion that dallas actually really genuinely truly was the beating heart of the 80s nightclub avant garde (they are literally the only people saying this)

no doubt
even in greenville, sc there was well-known one, among residents of that area (although most people would snicker and laugh when they talked about it... cause, ya know, gay) that had been going since the 80s

i once bought a metric buttload of newbeat, italo, and early house/techno records from a sadly neglected record store in Muncie, Indiana. judging by the stamps and notes on their sleeves, these appeared to be the in house collection for a gay club called perry's, which i'm guessing must have been off the chain in the 80s and 90s. cool crap was happening everywhere back then and i often feel as if it's only because nightlife has historically been so poorly documented that folks venerate places like the warehouse/loft/paradise garage/music institute/starck/etc.

I'm guilty of lauding detroit and chicago (to a lesser extent new york) because it's easy to identify as a style. It's like tagging a city, a city symphony, where there's an identifiable strand to latch onto. I guess other city scenes are less documented so I'm missing out.

Watched the doc though thanks. Likable talking heads sell the story well.

yeah, i mean, like a lot of us, a very strong picture forms in my mind when i hear the phrase "detroit techno", even though I know better than most that said movement was almost entirely a figment of the european imagination. chicago still has a strong musical lineage for reasons which aren't quite clear to me, though you will be well and truly heartbroken, should you ever visit wayne county or nyc with the expectation of hearing loads of music which sounds like todd terry or psyche.
