The Grime Hall of Shame

butterz did the thing of repackaging grime as garage. they managed to make it tenable for garage revivalists.

from there you get your flava d's and so forth.

"Instrumental Grime Culture" predated them but there was most certainly an issue where they took great pride in avoiding contact with MCs outside of the rare exceptions such as P or Trim. Not a BAD Decision but one that had consequences because it was reminiscent of the eternal war in dubstep to get rid of "guys talking over my favorite song I didn't pay for but ripped from sets I downloaded on the internet".

and unfortunatly that notion of grime being "punk" or having punkish qualities is the thing white dons latched onto HARD,reminds me of when bespectacled lads named Todd would feel they had to bring up Jim Thompson to talk about why the Clipse were good.

thats how we"ve kinda ended up with slowthai he seems like a nice lad but alot of his stuff strikes me as tacky horrorcore shit

It's this impossible thing isnt it, grime trying to work out how to sell itself to England at large. Roll deep pretending to be Madness. Cheeky chappies doing a pub man skank. Some jolly brass parping away.

i said this to luke last summer. i think luke said it's not him even trying to be jamaican.

spiderrr spiderrr tigerrr tigerrr.

sounds more like a pirate than anything.

Doogz has fully embraced the Jamaican thing now and it really doesn't work for him.

Where's that bizarre John Cleese tweet about how he doesn't consider London a part of England? Grime inherently is saddled with the perspective of being alien.

I keep remembering how so many Dizzee interviews for US in the US or even for Giggs involves them reflecting on Black Americans saying "Oh I didn't know they had black people there." and the small rage they have to suppress. That sense of invalidity.

There's not enough people in Newham and Tower Hamlets to sustain you in a career. This is one reason why storming (and riko to a lesser extent) pivoted to drum and bass cos you have a nationwide scene with rAves every week. Worldwide even.

Doogz just makes me sad man, really sad there were some days back in the day where i would argue he was better than Titch but maaan seeing him now hurts

also let me just be the one to mention how fucking dissapointing Icekid has been overall, all that potential and i think its safe to say the highlight of his career was that freestyle he did with big head Chipmunk on the "Grimes not dead" dvd

flow dan another culprit actually

The variability in quality of Flow Dan's put on Yardie vox is fascinating to hear over the course of the years. All his bizarre tics and affectations.

At about 6:40 look at that weird put on 'kmt & stare' bit. What the fuck is he doing that for? It's so gaudy.

Donae'o deserves credit for whatever he thought he was doing with the West Country accent.

doneo's a whole universe all of his own. what he does doesn't impact the real world. like a multiverse superman or something, he doesn't change the continuity.

IDK if you even can count Donae'o because he's been written out of things and had to force his relevance back based on his successes elsewhere. There's def. a period of Grime's audience where nobody knew they should care who Donae'o was.

i wanted to do a thread about ket at one point. its the antithesis of everything good. the worst people, with the word values, with no culture.

Honestly what I said about Donae'o could apply to Maxwell D too and he was def. guilty of some bizarre affectations.
