Jordan Peterson thinks it makes sense to compare humans with lobsters

I'm not sure why some people think so highly of Peterson, particularly people who claim to value 'facts and logic' and all that, when he does stuff like this and claims he didn't sleep for 25 days after drinking cider. I'm reminded of Steve Jobs trying to cure his cancer with acupuncture etc rather than just listening to his doctors. Apparently his arguments are pretty easily taken apart too, particularly when he starts talking about postmodernism.

Still. Hopefully he recovers. The back and forth on Twitter's predictably grim and not worth looking at.

He is not about facts and logic. He is no Sam Harris 'rationalist', He is firmly in the phenomenological/ existential school of psychotherapy. And no wonder if he got some wacko ideas about nutrition since his daughter was cured from all sorts of things by eating beef only.

I didn't say he was, I said some of the people who are seem to think highly of him. There's some overlap between him and the clips of various people "destroying" students etc on YouTube. And it's a bit more than 'wacko ideas about nutrition'. He claimed to have gone without sleep for 25 days after drinking apple cider. That's fourteen days more than the world record...

He has tendency to exaggerate a bit. He hardly speaks like your average academic. That and people in general read stuff way too literal obviously distort things.

He stated it multiple times in the same interview and his tenth rule for life is 'be precise in your speech'...

Well it is not about whether you didnt sleep for 25 or 15 or 10 days straight. It is about how his exact experience was.

He does not see the world as the rationalist science dorks wants us to see it. His opposite is not Zizek, it is Sam Harris. Peterson owes much more to romantic continental philosophy that he might want to admit.

:crylarf:

It's about how his exact experience was, he explicitly stated his exact experience was not sleeping at all for 25 days, but it's not about whether or not he didn't sleep for 25 days because it's about how his exact experience was. Right...

Ok whatever. He has some wacko ideas and experiences. He is probably not without mistakes. So what. What I still miss is after several years nobody seriously goes after his ideas in full. It's all personal attacks or very lame cliched critique pieces

I'm not convinced. I think the ideas are red herrings. The alignments are what's important.

The impression I get is that he WAS a serious academic but he's kinda chucked that in and just uses it for cover to spout a load of bollocks which people consequently give too much weight to... some people anyhow.

His entire shtick is that people need to forget about silly things like activism and get their own houses in order. Turns out he's a drug addled lunatic with insane ideas about diet and health. He's in no position to be preaching to anyone.

It is a good idea to tidy your room. A less good idea to align yourself with known racists and reactionaries under current circumstances

Maybe he does that, Idk. The guilty by association is a tough game to win (lose?) in this connected world.
